We were well pleased to get 11 weeks out an 11kg gas bottle on our travels this year. We had a good mix of sites, Aires/Stellplatz and wild camping.
It reminded me of a story I heard a few years back when I met another Scottish couple in Portugal who had a novel way of saving gas 'Save gas, biyult (boiled) eggs' is what they said.. They would boil 14 eggs all at once and that was their breakfast for the whole week. Boiled eggs every morning, I know what they do to my digestive system and suspect that their 'van must have stank to high heaven. I wouldn't go this far though.
We've just started to copy a couple we seen putting 2lt bottles of water in the sun. We assumed it would be enough to reduce boiling times for coffee etc but the water is piping hot, hot enough to wash with in or even wash dishes with. Only started this in the last week but hope we can beat 11 weeks with the current 11kg gas bottle.

Keith.
I thought my father in law was mean because he just adds another tea bag the the old ones to make a pot of tea, but this takes the biscuit, (cheap packet of broken ones reduced to 10p as the shop closes at 3.55 on Sunday and you have been waiting outside for the opportune moment whilst praying that nobody else gets them
While stationed in germany in the early seventies the german cleaner in the office would boil an egg in the kettle when making the morning coffee, she would then make the coffee for us then have the egg for her breakfast.
One of the Warrant Officers objected to this and told her the water would give us ulcers, I still don't know if there was any truth in this.
If you're running out of matches to light the gas use a pin or razor/stanley blade to split them into 4 or more, take care though, blades are sharp and matches burn
The water in the sun is a good idea. If you can find the black plastic bottles, (I think it is a certain flavour of tango) then the black abosrbs the suns rays better.
An outdoor solar shower works ok too, but small water capacity, but ok for the dogs etc.
I am pretty much always on hook up so don't worry about gas use etc, but do admit to boiling the kettle and then using that hot water for the pan of spuds etc etc.

Some great tales there of being cheap thanks for those. Russel I like the black bottle idea I'll have a look through the bins on this site .
We were careful with the gas but didn't take things too far most of the time we didn't have EHU but even when we were we still need to use the gas for cooking. I am also a coffee addict and drink plenty through the day so it worked out fine we think.
