We have just bought a motor home (fiat ducato 1989 autotrail commanche) it does not have an awning and would like to get one but would also like a driveaway awning for the extra bit of space. We know little about them and need advice.

Hi, and welcome to the site!

The two main suppliers are Omnistor and Fiamma. Both are good awnings - we've had both.

Unless you're very competent, I'd be looking to get a supplier to fit it for you. They are very heavy, and need to be mounted properly to your van. If you're near to any outdoor shows, you can often get people to fit it at the show, while you wait.

There are a number of drive-away awnings around, but I know that the Khyam are a good, strong make.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about your van, so can't be any further help.

Gerald

Hello
Like you we have just bought our first MH (Autotrail Cheyenne 2000) and are learning fast about the different aspects of the van etc.
Ours came with a Fiamma Awning [MHF Link] fitted and a driveaway awning (a Sunncamp Maestro ST), although it was described in the sales details as a safari room. When we opened the bags it was not quite what we had expected (I think that we thought it would be like a privacy type room).
When we first tried to erect it, it just didn’t fit as we had expected and we have now learnt that they will never fit a motorhome as snugly as awnings fit a caravan, not having the continuous channel for the awning to slide into that a caravan has. We have persevered with it and have just ordered a double beaded tape to allow us to fit the driveaway awning to our Fiamma wind out awning. It will then slide into the groove along the bottom edge of the Fiamma Awning [MHF Link] when fully retracted to the van.
We did think about purchasing a Fiamma privacy room but were persuaded against purchasing by other motor home owners on this site, which advice we are very grateful for. We have found that Fiamma are well made and sturdy. Parts and accessories for them seem plentiful also. One piece of advice we have been given is to make sure that we use an awning tie down of some sort to prevent the Fiamma Awning [MHF Link] (attached to the van) from lifting if wind gets under it and potentially damaging our MH.
We live just outside Exeter so are a little closer to Outdoor Bits in Exmouth where David is very helpful and his prices seem to better a lot of other places with no postage to pay if you visit him yourselves.
Perhaps we’ll see you on the A38 one day and give you a wave when on our way to see our granddaughter in Plymouth.

I was lucky enough to have a Fiamma Zip Awning with sides included with my MH.

but the sides set up is very bulky and slow to set up.i would only take it if i was staying onsite somewhere for a week +

i picked up some lilypad net sides and front for the windout awning and they make a great addition to the traveling kit.

hope this helps

Lebs,welcome.

I live not far from Wincanton Zummerset.
I have in my loft a Harrison drive away awning,i have only used it ten times(Great Dorset Steam Fair) its been in the loft for the last six years and I will never use it again, its grey and burgundy in colour, and it fitted a Elldis Autostratos,it would sit six adults around two tables.

If you like to come and get it you can have it ,(or anyone else for that matter).

Les

I'll second this. Light, they pack up small, and amazingly breeze-free.

Gerald

That would be great tinkering. Could we arrange the collection of awning. If you could email me at lebs@blueyonder.co.uk to arrange. Once again thank you

We had a second hand fiamma zip fitted to our MH after the old one was damaged and managed to get the awning off ebay quite cheaply. The first couple of times it took us a while to put up but now we have a "system" it only takes about 20 mins so we use it a lot, even for weekends away.

i only stay one night most places so it is just not required.but it is a good bit of kit to have for when you do need it Smile

the net sides are great just a couple of minutes to put up and the difference between sitting inside or outside quite often.

I agree - we don't use the full awning when we're touring either. I like sound of the net side too. Must look into those.
