We are looking for a new motorhome and wonder if there is much difference between the Ford Transit 115 bhp model such as that used on a CI Carioca 100, the Fiat 2.2 x 100bhp, or the Fiat 2.2 x 130 bhp as used on many Autitrail, Roller Team or Rapidos

Our choice of motorhome is likely to be in the range of a 3500kg 20ft low profile model.

Any advice as to fuel economy between the above would be helpful.

cant comment on transit, have had other 2 and the fiat 130 bhp wins every time can never have enough power, the fuel economy is dependent on weight and driving style, plus the 130 bhp has 6 speed box, jusy my opinion tho

We tow a Toyota Aygo behind our 4 ton Autotrail Cheynne 660 with no problems, we get around 23 mpg towing.

So if it is best to go for the larger Fiat engine which was probably the way I was leaning), I wonder how that engine compares with the Transit?

Don't overlook the Renaut Master. Can't speak for the new one but our 2008 Cipro 85 is a 150bhp auto on a low line and even on the country roads through France we are always over 30mpg.

The most important aspect is the comparable torque/weight measurement. The power output is secondary for all these engines, your best bet for ease of driving and fuel economy is to have a lot of torque at lower revs.

The Fiat 100 hits peak torque of 250NM at 1500 rpm, the 120 hits 320 NM at 2000 rpm, so it has quite a bit more but at higher revs and for a shorter rev range. That can negate the benefit of more torque by meaning you need to pull a lower gear. The Transit is a variation of the Puma engine as used by Citroen/Peugeot and hits 300NM at 1750rpm...all of which means there's very little to choose between any of them on paper.

You are better off with 6 gears rather than 5, so that probably eliminates the Fiat 100. Other than that, the reputation of the Ford is that it is more economical than the Fiat 120 as a van power unit, but that will be heavily affected by the rest of the vehicle - ie unless the body & weight are identical you'd never know an exact comparison.

Franly I doubt if you'll ever notice much difference in fuel consumption between any of them. Get 28mpg and you're doing pretty well. So the choice really boils down to how you feel about driving them. Not just the engine aspect though - with the Fiat you get a Fiat "cab", the other being a Transit "cab". Personally I prefer the space and layout in the Fiat and find the Transit a bit cramped, but that's just me!

HI - I run the new 2.2 140 bhp transit with the wide track motorhome chassis. It sits under a Chausson Flash 28 & is FWD with a 6 speed box. So, 7.25 mts long, low profile & it averages 27 mpg & drives like a car. More than pleased.

We've had the 2.2TDCi 130hp, [5 spd] lump, and it was superb. 30-32mpg.

Driven a 2.3 Fiat [6 spd] with remap and it's also a very good drive 27mpg.

We have 2.5 Renault with remap [6 spd tiptronic] and it's ok to drive, the above are nice to drive, but I'm nit-picking. At 27mpg, we are 3850Kg, and on A Class, so happy with that.

I think you can get the Ford remapped also.
Personally I would go Ford... why?
A fair few problems with Fiats [both my friend have had problems] and read the forum for more. That said they also have bigger market share!

We'd all like a Merc, for the price of Ford! wouldn't we?

That is very comprehensive thank you, if not totally giving a definitive answer. I think I do like the idea of a Ford but perhaps we will concentrate more on the habitation spec! We get 27 mpg driving below 60mph out af a Compass Avantguard 400 with overcab and on a 2 lt hdi Peugeot at the moment.
