I want to make soda bread (in the breadmaker) and the recipe requires buttermilk - before I head out to the shops for some anyone know if Tesco or Asda sell it?

Being from Northern Ireland where soda bread is a big thing I think I can say that butter milk is hard if not impossible to get in England. We always bring some with us for friends in Yorkshire who assure me it's impossible to get.

I would be very interested to hear whether you can find any, Alan.

Our local Waitrose sells it - not much help as we're a few hundred miles away, but if there's a Waitrose near you..... Very Happy

Very few Waitrose in Scotland I'm afraid.

Thanks

I didn't even know what buttermilk was so googled it and found this.

http://frugalliving.about.com/od/condimentsandspices/r/Buttermilk_Sub.htm

Sounds rank but if that's what you need go for it!

If you know anyone who's going to Byres Road there's one there, otherwise back to the drawing board I'm afraid.

hi,
sounds gross, but the link that greenie put up works fine, learnt that trick, must be,almost 50 years ago,and have made some great bread with using it,very quick bread,if people come and you want some in an hour or so.

used to live in a bedsit under 2 irish girls, and they always used milk that was just going off with a bit of lemon juice in, they taught me how to make champ as well, happy days,no money ,but we all shared food, recipes, clothes, etc.

brought back lots of memeries.

mags,
