I've heard about this before and last week had an info mail from my insurers (Caravan Guard) concerning the alarming rise in thefts of catalytic converters, particularly from motorhomes ('cos they're nice and high off the ground therefore easy to get under) and mainly from the Peugeot / Fiat / Sevel units, a) because they're incredibly easy to get at, and b) probably because they're one of the most common base vehicles found in the UK. Thefts so far this year have already exceeded last years total.
Surprised not to see any mention of this in the Security forum. Has anyone suffered the loss of they're cat ? Apparently they're around £750 > £950 to replace and of course hits your insurance NCD if not protected.
There are various guards on the market anywhere between £200 > £500. Looking under my Peugeot the Cat is shrouded from the chassis by a thin pressed steel plate so I'm thinking of fabricating and attaching a galvanised mesh guard underneath the cat, I know it won't stop it being stolen by a determined tea leaf but it is a deterrent, apparently it only takes <1min to cut the thing off using a power saw, if I can make it difficult they just may not bother.
There has been quite a lot of discussion about it on here, and I was about to suggest you do a search, but notice you are a non-subscriber at the moment.
If you choose to subscribe you will get access to the "search" facility, plus other benefits including a few handy discounts.
Bare in mind that a catalytic converter runs at very high temperature so anything which could conduct that heat to other less heat resistant components may cause heat damage or a fire.
