well i don't know if this is a fault that has come up before but i have just been told .my m/home needs a new wiring harness .
and all this was found from a fuel pump playing up back in april .
and now the reversing lights don't work. turns out the wiring harness is badly corroded.
been told by the garage that its a very big job as the engine has to come out.

Sounds highly unlikely you really do need a new loom.

OK, it's possible to ge corrosion near the back lights and some exposed spots. But the whole loom in just three years does not sound credible.

Ray.

Hi,

As Ray (aged 7) says it is hardly credible that the whole harness needs replacing after only three years. How well do you know and trust this garage. I'd get a second opinion. (actually I'd buy some wire and solder and have a go at it myself)

I'd agree with Ray, very, very unlikely that the harness itself will be corroded maybe isolated connectors of which there are one hell of a lot although most of them are inside the van under the dash area so they should not be affected. To be of much more assistance would need to know the background of the van i.e. whether it had ever been flood damaged etc.
There are several different parts to the complete harness all connected to one another with connector blocks, the ones open to the elements are pretty well protected but the most likely to play up.
My advice to you would be seek a second opinion from a decent auto electrician, preferably one with motorhome (or commercial) experience

So, under 3 years old?

What's the warranty period?

Incidentally, there's no way the loom should have enough corrosion to need replacement at this age, I'd definitely get another opinion, and if confirmed, I'd be looking for signs of flood damage.

Being in Northhants you might have had more than your fair share of snow and salt the last couple of years.
This will get thrown up at the rear lights and connections. It might also have got spayed up into the engine compartment from the front wheels but not as much.

I might be interesting and economical to lay on your back under the van with a good torch or light just to see what corrosion there is.

My van was parked near the east coast for a couple of years while the then owner waited to die of cancer. The van did suffer some rust to a frame member below the radiator and slight corrosion to the aluminium trim round the windows and doors. But nothing that couln't be corrected with time and effort.

Ray.

sounds to me as if the garage are trying to make it an easy job, by changing the loom instead of repair.however this makes it much more expensive for you. However until you know how bad it is you can make no decision.

With most motor vehicles the loom is one of the first things to go into the body shell followed by the carpets. I imagine our motorhomes are similar bearing in mind only vehicle bits that will have been tapped into the original loom the Luton being 240v & 12v separate circuits.

I think it most unlikely that a loom is required just one ore two repairs here and there. As others have advised buy yourself some kit and have a go yourself. Just think of the satisfaction you will get.

I think the clue reguarding the garage is in suggesting taking the engine out to fit a harness in the first place Surprised

There are known faults on some of the fiat cars reguarding a yellow multiblock connecter that gets high resistence and burns thus giving an intermitant fault on the fuel pump circuit, which sounds more likely.. As for the rear lights ,probably a coroded conection as others have mentioned....

Find an honest competant garage, but easier said than done ..

Replacing a loom an easy job ?????

I think not Surprised there are hundreds of different connections located all over the vehicle. Its a MAMOTH job and one I would avoid at all possible costs.

Have they quoted a price?? If not I would suggest you are seated with a LARGE drink in front of you before asking the question.
