Nasa is launching it's Juno satellite to Jupiter tomorrow and it will be using solar panels as its energy source, the furthest they have ever bee used from the sun. In Earth orbit the 60sq m of panels will produce 14,000W of power but in Jupiters orbit that will only be 480W because sunlight is only 1/25th of the strength.

Obviously they have developed state of the art solar cells for this mission, but by my reckoning a 1.2m x 0.6m panel of Juno cells will produce 170W compared to my 80W - and thats above the atmosphere.

I bet the cost a little over double per sq m!

Kev

They would be considerably more efficient in Earth Orbit than on the surface as they do not have a polluted atmosphere to dilute the sun's rays.
