when on our travels if we want to watch premium channels on sky we have to take our sky box from the house with us which of course is 240volt. If we bought a dedicated12v Sky box for the van how would we get the premium channels, would we have to have a sky multiroom subscription or is there another way round this?

I may be proved wrong, but I believe that there is no such thing as a 12V Sky box. You will only be able to view Sky subscription channels with a Sky box. A small inverter would power your Sky box.

Hi town,

I don't believe that there is an alternative to taking a full sky 240v box with you if you want all the channels. We have hd sky+ and multi room sky+ which goes with us. Don't forget you will need an inverter to run it and when it says please connect the phone, press back up and then when it says no signal, just go to the channels and it will tune itself.

Thanks guys for quick response. I know where i can get a refurbished Pace 12v sky box, have friends who have them in their vans and seem to work ok, only problem is they don't use premium channels. Gather some sky users install the 12v box's as part of a multiroom config and then move them to their vans!!! but wondered if there was a way round having to have multiroom, don't know if sky mobile would offer a solution but guess you would need a wi fi connection?

If you disconnect the multi room sky plus box from the phone line in you're home to use on the motorhome do you get letters from sky asking you to reconnect it.

4 options

1) Get a pace box, get this permanently paired to your card, and take it to/from the van.

2) Get a multiroom subscription, get a pace box, use that as your "extra room" box, and take it to/from the van. This has the advantage that if your main room is Sky+ or HD, you can leave it in situ to record whatever you wanted to record.

3) Get a pace box, leave it in van, get the card re-paired to the pace box whenever you go away.

4) Get a dreambox. People in the know can configure these so it has the same identity as your main Sky box, so the card is defacto paired to both and you simply take the card from home box to motorhome box. Beware though, configuring one of these is not for the feint hearted, and dreamboxes are well and truly bandit territory (this configuration is against the letter of your Sky contract but is within the spirit; other uses of dreamboxes are outright dodgy, e.g. cloning cards to steal/share Sky subscriptions).

With all of these options, because you're supposed to keep the box plugged into the phone line (especially with multiroom+premium, ie 2nd option), if you're away for a while you may get a warning from Sky, and ultimately charged for 2 sets of premium channels if you don't plug it back in.

Finally, other option is to get the pace box and not bother pairing the card with it. In this case, your Sky subscription will work, but not the premium (sports, movies) ones.

The small print asks for the box to be connected to the phone line for 12 months. Mine has been connected for two years. They have not written

How voracious they are about checking if your phone line's connected depends upon whether you've got premium channels. If you have, they do ping the line to check you're connected. You get a warning letter before they take any action, though.

Sky boxes "ping" back to their computers at least once a month.
Usually, if they get no Ping for 3 months thats when the letters start to arrive, asking you to get the sky box conencted to a phone line so it can contact Sky.

If this is not done after 4 months, then the discounted multiroom cards that do not ping back are then charged at the correct subscription rate, not the £10 rate.

I know recently they have done an audit, as a number of peopl who tried to use their multiroom card here in Spain questioned why their sky bill just increase by £30 per omnth...they ignored the letters, so Sky have started to charge the correct rates...

There are ways around the multiroom phone connection...just say tot he sky rep there is no phone line in the room, and mention it again to the installer, and they will make a note of it on the systems....
