After some years of getting internet access from McDonalds and Wifi hotspots I have finally found a low cost solution to the problem of mobile internet access in France. Once you have found it its easy!
Orange 3G Mobicarte SIM. Its pay as you go and rates are very reasonable.

Hi David
Welcome to the forum - interesting first post.
I notice you are resident in France (or is it Andorra?)
Can you tell us if it's necessary to have an address in France in order to buy the SIM you recommend?
Maybe you could also include a URL so we can access some more detailed information . . . like, "Is it true PAYG, or does it self-destruct after a set period?"

No address in France required. SIM is valid for 6 months, extended at each top up. Top up can be with voucher or online. ID document required in France to activate the SIM.
3G coverage in France is not very good. Looked at the map and it seems I've got to drive 30 miles to the nearest area of decent coverage from our house south of Limoges. There are, however, quite a few MacDonalds a lot nearer (all you need to buy is a cup of coffee and in France Maccy D's coffee isn't bad.) Never mind 3G - we have to stand on the bed upstairs and hold the phone up at arm's length to get any sort of signal at all - and that comes and goes.
I've been mainly using my smart phone for net access abroad for the last couple of months. I signed up for the Vodafone data traveller package before I left. £10 a month for 25mb a day which doesn't sound much but it's a lot on a smart phone. I gave Vodafone a bit of a slagging a couple of months ago because they said the allowance had to be used on a phone and not tethered to a laptop or in a dongle but to be honest I can do most things on the phone. I just wait until I get wifi in the van when I want to do banking etc on the laptop. To everyones annoyance I'm on here every day now when they thought I had cleared off for a while:-)
the other advantage of using the phone via Vodafone is it picks up what ever the Best signal is regardless of provider (currently surfing via sfr) so I have always got online and often with 3g or Edge.
I can claim it as a business expense as well!
