Hi Gang

I did introduce ourselves about a month ago. Our poor little Pilote 390 has now been written off following an engine fire. So the long toil of searching starts again.

I have a question, if it is okay to ask in this section. Budget of around Ł7k (still waiting to try and get some more money out of the insurance company!!). I know it will be an old vehicle we will be buying, similar to our last but would there be any benefits of Diesel vs Petrol, probably 2-2.5 litre.

Thanks in advance

Jim and Sue

Oh gosh Jim & Sue.
You pays yer money and takes yer chance.

Usually ............. a diesel engine will last longer and be more frugal. But you generally pay more and if it goes wrong will cost more to repair.

Ray.

Diesel cheaper to service. No spark plugs (diesel may have glow plugs, but only change when fail), distributor cap, rotor arm, ht leads.
Mainly just oil and filters to change on diesel but may have more frequent oil changes than petrol.

Diesel have much better torque so easier to go uphill.

As for MPG I would guess on a small MH petrol 20mpg diesel 30mpg.

It might be worth looking at how many miles you do a year and work out the cost difference in fuel vs cost of vehicle.

We recently changed cars. Worked out that we only do 3,500 a year in the car, so couldn't justify the extra cost of buying diesel version of car we wanted. Bought the petrol and its great fun Smile

Beware if buying an older diesel because many of them were pretty gutless. Some of the petrol equivalents from 15 or so years ago were more powerful by far but they will be more expensive on fuel. My advice would be to have a good test run and take it up some hills.

The biggest advantage from your point of view is that diesel is far less flammable than petrol, so diesels are far less liable to go up in flames. Wink
