The make doesn't matter much - they all work OK as far as I know.
However, its Baud Rate MUST be 4800bps or it won't work . . . . unless the latest 2011 version of AR is more tolerant (We have 2010.)
>> This << is the one a number of us use and I know it to be brilliant. After finding the satellites for the first time (which can take up to a minute) it has a built in memory, so thereafter it takes literally 5 seconds to lock on.
If you move a long way without using it (hundreds of miles) it may have to search again, but that will not happen often, and a minute's delay (or less) is not a big problem.
It is also waterproof and magnetic so you can stick it on the outside of the van for a better signal . . . . . ours never leaves the dashboard glove box and works perfectly, so no problem there either.
Just about every question is answered in this thread. Are you sitting comfortably . . . . ? >> Click here <<
I bought one off ebay a couple of years ago.Cost less then a tenner. From Hong Kong, Same as Zeb's water proof etc. Works ok on 2007 maps you can change the baud rate.

I got a GPS dongle from Santa (BlueNext BN-903S), but it doesn't work with Autoroute 2010
I found on the net that although it is baud rate 9600, it can work at 4800 which is what AR needs, and there's some advice on software to force the change of baud rate. However, I read on one of the threads here that it's a pain, and apparently has to be done again and again.
Also, when I ask AR to start GPS tracking, it says that the GPS is sending signals but they're not recognised as NMEA 2.0 compatible.
I looked up the GLOBALSAT BU353 SIRFSTAR III USB GPS RECEIVER dongle that others recommend on MHF but...
The one here and on e-bay say they are NMEA 0183, which is what my own one is.
Those who have the BU 353 - did yours say NMEA 0183 too? - I know folk use them very successfully with AR, but I don't want to buy one that's maybe old stock which won't work.
If you can't reconfigure your dongle and want to keep it, you need advice from Spykal.
I could never get Franson GPS Gate to work reliably with a 9600 dongle, but Mike has no trouble as far as I know. He set his up once and it works fine . . . mine always made me stop in a layby a mile or two from home and re-configure it. (Probably not entirely compatible with my netbook?)
This is probably what you read about having to force it repeatedly. Franson is third party software which converts the Baud rate "on the fly". That's not the same as re-setting your dongle.
If you can permanently re-set the Baud rate to 4,800 on your new dongle it should work fine, every time and without any further fiddling. I would try that before doing anything else.
Thanks Dave and teensvan - I'll see if I can get them to take the one I have back. If not, I'll struggle with it for a bit before giving up altogether.
It's obviously locked on to a satellite, but not able to send the info to AR.
Will AR work with the one in the link above, even if it's NMEA 0183 rather than 2.0?
Thanks for that:
Nov 2010 "No you don't have to buy the version that has the "GPS Locator", as Microsoft call it, included. If you wish you can buy the standard version and then get a GPS Dongle or receiver "mouse" from a cheaper source."
