While I was away last week my next door neighbour fell for the 'Microsoft Phone Scam'.

Someone phoned up pretending that they were from Microsoft and told her that they had detected a problem with her computer and that they could correct it for her.

They took over her PC, pretended that they had found multiple viruses and then told her that they could remove them but there would be a charge.

It's a known scam but for a senior citizen who is not particularly computer-savvy it was very believable - and she was charged £230 for this 'service'. Beware!

Fortunately she paid by credit card so I've advised her to report the fraud to her credit card provider.

I have just had the very same phone call,an Indian chap purporting to represent microsoft informing me that my computers had multiple viruses and would soon become unusable.

The chap was very plausible,he knew my name and address, fortunately I remembered this thread and didn't let it progress any further.I asked him for his name and contact details so I could ring back later,so if anyone wants to talk to a scammer from India ring Joshua Payne on 02081338831 Laughing

They tried it on with me a few months ago. I simply asked how they had got my phone number as I am ex directory.
No reply so I tapped the hash key repeatedly, it is supposed to b*****r up any auto dial machine.
Don't know if it does but it made me feel good.

I have been getting these calls sometimes twice a week. All have an asian accent but give an english name, they obviously think that would make them more trustworthy Rolling Eyes

I have played along with it several times (apart from accessing my computer) before eventually tell them to p*** off, I wasnt born yesterday

One chap rang me 3 times within half an hour

I have had a dozen or so calls, and I just have fun with them. Cool

I pretend to be worried and keep asking questions until I get fed up and can't be bothered any more.

Then I say, "I haven't got a computer, but thanks anyway - it was very interesting."

I thought I knew most of the Anglo-Saxon expletives, but a couple of Indian "gentlemen" were extremely fluent when I said that!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

One of them complained bitterly that I had wasted his time . . . to which I replied, "Seems only fair to me since idiots like you keep wasting mine."

Play them at their own game. Wink Cool Cool

It's not just Microsoft that they claim to be from either - see here:

Just keep this script by the phone and use it when the next call comes in:

Got a call today from an Indian sounding call centre telling me that my computer had a problem.

They told me to press the Windows + R keys.

"It doesn't do anything", says I.

"Oh. Please select the Windows icon at the bottom corner of the screen, then"

Me - "I haven't got a Windows icon".

Mumblings, then a different person says, "What does your icon show?"

Me - "A letter K".

Call centre - "Mmm. What does the K mean?"

Me - "KDE"

Call centre - "What operating system are you running?"

Me - "Linux, of course".

Call centre then hangs up.

Colin

PS - I gleaned this from the forum at kitz.co.uk

I took one of those calls while we were in Devon and had great fun with them......

His opening bid was that he was from our BB supplier Orange.....

I said that could not be true and he went through loads of details garnered from various places but all seemed reasonably accurate....

but I neither confirmed or denied any of the facts.....

that was worrying as they had bits they must have got from Orange....

problem was we had finished with Orange when we moved house a year earlier and were with BT then.

Silence........

I then dropped in a great line that the number they had rung was ex-directory and not available for public use....

I told them that it was a dedicated line allocated to emergency services and had automatically been logged.

i asked his name and said that the telecomms authorities would be taking action to prevent it happening again, which might include their licence to use it being revoked, I was asked to hold on for a second to talk to a supervisor.......

apologies came so thick and fast and grovelling that I think if I had asked I could have been given the moon on a silver plate.....

eventually I terminated the call saying thank you for explaining, they would hear from us later that morning........

End of conversation, but I had really enjoyed it and feel they probably hadn't....... Laughing

I have had several of these calls.

When they say they are from Microsoft I thank them for there concern that my computer has been effected by viruses.

When they say they can help me to sort it out I then ask them what compensation I can expect for the potential damage to my computer through the failure of their Microsoft Security Software that they offer to do it's work.

Alternatively I ask them what Operating System I have on the computer they say I have.

Or I ask them why they are ringing me re my Microsoft computer as I have an Apple Mac.

It all seems to go silent then.
