We are thinking of going to Portugal later in the year and then flying home for Christmas returning early January.

We are looking into storing our motorhome at the secure storage site near Lagos but are concerned about insurance. Our own insurers will not cover us.

Does anyone know of a way around this? Is it possible to obtain additional insurance just for this 6 week period? Can anyone offer any advice?

Thank you

This is an issue which comes up frequently. With no apparent resolution from the UK Insurance Market.

Even Insurance Companies offering 'Europe 365 days' or 'Full-time' seem to baulk at a vehicle unattended.

Firstly in your situation I would start by asking what insurance cover the secure site has. If not enough, ask if you can pay thier additional premium for 6 weeks.

Apart from that and on a broader approach to this problem I am wondering whether it would be better for all of us to look at a different insurance market for this situation.

The MH Insurance Market, which is mostly through Brokers who have a direct link to certain motor Underwriters (Insurance Companies or LLoyd's Syndicates). That cover, by law, must include Third Party cover throughout Europe. This cover is not cancelled while off-the-road, but is the highest part of Underwriters' exposure.

Now to look at other possibilities.

You have a Chatel; a possession, in storage just like a piece of furniture. It is not necessary for the owner to have insurance for Motor Third Party liability.

(However I have to tread carefully here, because some countries require mootr insurance to be continuous, whether the vehicle is on or off the road)

The other possibility is to continue with normal Mh insurance and take out a Chatel's insurance for the 6 weeks.

That is where a small firm of Lloyd's brokers(are there still any?) can come into their own.

Sorry for long answer but it might be helpful to you and many others.

Might not help you but Comfort apparently cover this, but at additional cost, see....
