When I purchased my first motorhome 6 weeks ago the vendor told me that the smalll white circular tv aerial attatched to the roof (which I now believe is a vision plus model) did not work. Instead he had adapted a standard tv aerial similar to the one on my house which sits on an extendable pole attached to the ladder at the back and as you can imagine - this looks rather unsightly and is a bit of a pain to set up. I am not familiar with the circular type of aerial and I dont know how they work or how good they are but I would really like to get rid of the bodged attachment to my ladder and either fix the old aerial or replace it with something better. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hi Tony

I can give you some info in basic terms.
The round antenna you have is an omni directional type which means it will recieve a tv signal from any direction. This saves you having to worry about where to point the antenna when you arrive on site.
the downside of these type of antenna is that they are a compromise as they dont have a lot of "gain" which is like having some diretionability and so the picture tends to be wearer if your on the fringes of the signal. They often use a booster which is located in a cupboard somewhere which helps by boosting the signal. with that type of antenna you often find nuberous channels of different strengths when you tune the telly in so if you tune in and find BBC1 is a crap picture you can often find a better BBC1 on another channel
On the whole they are not that good unless you are in a fairly good signal area.

The "yagi" type that the bloke suggested that looks like a normal TV antenna are, as a whole better as you point them at the transmitter or rotate them till you get a good signal. Being directional they tend to accept signals from one direction and reject others and they also tend to amplify the signal due to the design.
The down side of these is that they have to be set up, you have to rotate them and they look less "charismatic" saying that you can buy a tv signal finder for about 15 quid which you pug the antenna into and rotate it and look at a meter or a set of lights to find the strongest signal so its a lot less hassle. Also being pole mounted you can often mount them higher to get a better picture as opposed to the circular one which is roof mounted.
there is an antenna roof mounted on an extendable pole but this makes little difference in my opinion as it only extends about 14 inches.

If TV is a must have in your van (and it is for many - me included)and you are going to spend money then i would look at setting up a portable satellite system. you would get this for the same as buying a new TV antenna but you would get the same (good) quality picture wherever you were in europe (generaly) as long as you can see the satelite and dont have any trees etc nearby.

I have had a sat system of one sort for the last 12 yrs and can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times i have not been able to get a tv pic. A portable system has advantages over a roof mount as you can often mave the dish to see the satelite.

I hope this info is useful

Phill
