popped in a farmshop while out last weekend missus picked up a small jar of pickled onions, i thought great haven't had any for a while, only other thing we bought tub of ice cream, handed over a fiver at the till and about dropped through the floor, when she told me the 1lb jar of onions was £3;85 couldn't have been more than a dozen onion's in there about 35p each, so i put them back on the shelf, got a bit of earache from the wife and foolishly said i'd do some myself,
of course you know she came home tuesday with a 5kg net bag of onion's and a gallon of vinegar, when we were first married i used to do loads of pickling my mum always had an old sweet jar or two full of onions, so we had a few of the old kilner jar's and when i dug in the back of the shed found a full pack of jars we'd bought in france once,
said wife is on night's, so yesterday while she was sleeping i set about the onion's, took me just over an hour and then i boiled up about 1/2 the vinegar, this morning i jarred up the onions and filled them up with the now cold vinegar, i had 7lbs of peeled onions and they filled 4 medium size kilner jars, i estimate it would have filled about a dozen of the small jam jars at the farmshop,
the sack of onion's were £4 and the vinegar £5;99 at lidl i only used half the vinegar and boiled up an assortment of peppers and chillis for the spice in it, so approx £7;50 for a dozen jars ,
i remembered now why i stopped doing them it was because we ended up giving jars of onions out to everybody that came round or taking them with us to bar bies, and one year when i came to do them had almost no jar's, my onions were alway's very crunchy and had a real bite [secret is the chillies in the vinegar] it must be 6 or 7 years since i last made them ,
hmmm, got some jars and pity to let the other half of the vinegar go to waste ,looks like i'll have to go and get some more onion's!!!.

...but if I costed my labour and the jars I don't think I could charge much less for my jam that I have just made. (rasberry, blackcurrant, gooseberry jams, redcurrant and bramble jellies). Plus I recently bought a new jelly strainer and a jam thermometer and have you seen the price of electricity etc etc....

Comparing home made with shop bought it's so easy to fall into the same trap as when comparing a long ferry with and short ferry and a lot of driving - that is only including the obvious costs and not including ALL the costs.

Making pickles/chutney/jam/whatever doesn't just cost the ingredients, as Franks says it also costs your time, the containers, the energy costs, the equipment costs etc. etc.

You may be able to discount those "hidden" costs when producing stuff for your own consumption (even if you are still deluding yourself as to their "true" cost) but do you really expect someone who is producing stuff to sell at (hopefully) a profit, to do the same?

Now try adding in all the time you spent making those pickles at the national minimum wage rate and see how much each jar cost.

Then do the sum again at the rate you'd expect to be paid to do it as a full-time job. Wink

Hi.
But what price the "Feel good" factor, when your tucking in to something you have created yourself, from picking the berries etc.
Having said that,i managed to stop my first wife knitting me pullovers, they were sort of,never mind the quality, feel the width,LOL.
Gearjammer..
PS. If i get a weeks work away, she will have forgotten i said that.

I had to stop my Mum knitting me bathing trunks for the same reason - no feelgood factor. Rolling Eyes
