Wondered if anyone had experienced what we seem to be getting with our new sat system.

Recently had a new Alden 80cm Orbiter, Telestar mini HD receiver and Avtex 185 installed in the van.

The problem we're getting is that at certain times of the day ( around 9 in the morning and again around 5-6 in the evening) the digital signal starts to pixulate and break up. It does this for about 10-15 mins then gradually comes back and is then fine.

I've been to 2 different sites where previously Iv not had an issue at all with the signal ( using other satellite equipment) so I know its not the location or interference from trees, buildings etc.

The other odd thing is if I switch the signal to the TV and receiver ( not HD receiver) in the bedroom the signal quality and strength is fine and we have a good picture.

Any ideas? This is really annoying as both times when it does it I'm usually having my breakfast and want to catch up on the news and then the same in the evening.

Thanks

Is the loss on ALL channels or only a certian few channels?

You say it was OK using other equipment, so maybe look at the box or the cabling....

Does the HD box work OK in the other location where the signal is OK all the time? That will elimiinate eithre the box or the cabling...

Maybe the cabling needs to be looked at...a slightly dodgy conenction can cause issues?

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, it does do it on all channels including radio.

Will have a look at the cabling and next time away may swap the boxes around.

If as you say bad connections could be at fault, why should it only be at certain times of the day?

The satellite moves around in an imaginary box during the earths rotation so if at the time you first aligned your dish it was at one end of the box but at 9 and 5 it's at the other end then the signal is weaker. I would try realigning it when it is weak.

Not too sure if this will be the cause...as the OP says it is affected ALL channels...and the channels are spread over 4 satellites...Astra 1a, Astra 2b, Astra 2d, Eurobird1, ( and soon Astra 1n!).

The satellites do all move around in a box 100km cubed...which is not enough movements to lose all channels from all 4 satellites!

And also remember the OP says all is OK on one box, but not the other, so it sounds like dish alignment is not an issue.

Understood but a bad connection is a bad connection and not time related Rolling Eyes

Probably a combination of things

I have been told the problem is due to the satellites rolling a bit to maximise the solar panel exposure. Not sure I believe the theory!

But I have not seen any adverse affects recently and I am in a fringe reception area....Valencia

And it would be unusual for all 4 satellites to have the same "weakening" affect at the same time...

The only issues I have seen a drop of reception from Astra 2d in the afternoons, when hte heat (35-40d) and humidity cause the signals to drop for the Astra 2d horizontal channels.

Take it back to the installer and ask them to fix it. I have gone from southern spain to Aberdeen and am now back in north spain and at no time have I ever lost any channel or had pixalation. With a 80cm dish in the UK everthing should be perfect unless ofcourse your under a tree Smile

Not sure if it still happens ( but suspect it still does) but the link and transmitter changeover times for the satellite transmitting station used to be between 08:00 and 09:00 and 18:00 to 19:00.
Basically to keep the hours similar on a set of transmitters at the satellite station, they switch transmitters onto a standby one for a twelve hour period, then switch it back to the main transmitter.
I do not watch television in the mornings but have noticed breakup on our home system which have a 1.2 metre dish !.
