OK Ive got an 85w solar panel two 100ah batteries and a mains charger.
In the morning (not on hookup) the voltage of the batteries could be 12.4 to 11.8 depending on when the van last moved and how much TV was watched only other main drain is 12v fridge.
Now the confusing bit mid UK summer full sun the solar panel does not start to show any input till about 10am then it will start to put in 3 to 4 amps. On hookup voltage 13.8v cloudy 8am and solar panel putting in 1.5 amps when i don't really need it?
Can anybody shed any light as to why it takes so long to start charging when not on hookup?

cheers manners.

What type of panel is it? Poly or Mono.
Whether on hook up or not should make no difference. If the battery is calling for charge it should deliver it in daylight unless the regulator is dodgy Rolling Eyes

Sounds like you need a new regulator. My panels have usually finished charging by between 10 and 11.00 AM

Is there any sort of a shadow early on when not on hook-up? Panels have some protection but even a small shadow can bring down the output markedly. The fact that the output seems to go up so quickly does seem to point in this direction.
As suggested the inverter could also be faulty.

Iam not sure what type of panel it is it was on the van when i bought it. If the regulator has had it why does it work when on hook up on a cloudy day, and not when in full sun no shade with out hook up?
It does eventually charge back up to about 13v with fridge running by evening, with out hookup, but wondering why the delay?

Fridge wont run on 12 volts without the engine running OR you'd be flat within a few hours

3.5 amp or more then so no surprise you wake up to 11.8 volts often. Still looks like the regulator is questionable
