My laptop has fallen foul of a virus this morning and while I wait for my IT chap to call out to fix it (in 2 days time) I am using my little Samsung notebook to get by on.

Just 2 problems so far................I have no Word software so can't open some email attachments and can't find out how to link to my printer.

I can try Open office - it might work but last time I tried it I had problems getting it to open up some of the word documents. I have the Word 2003 CD but no CD drive on netbook Rolling Eyes
So if anyone can advise re connecting notebook to printer I would be grateful.

WARNING...............The W32/Blaster worm attacked my laptop whilst I was browsing a Google search result this morning. It appears to have wiped out my own security software (Microsoft Security Essentials) and replaced it with a fake Windows security software which is asking for full payment before the offending files can be removed. I could be wrong but this is what 'appears' to have happened. The web page I was looking at was a cookery one!

Cheers
Maura

Sorry to hear of your problem, my good lady had exactly the same problem with her laptop some months ago.

Like you it appeared that her software AV was disabled somehow. Eventually managed to cure the problem by starting laptop in "SAFE" mode and carrying out a recovery to a date prior to the infestation date.

Not saying it will work for you, but it sorted other half's 'puter out.

Oh yes, she's running Vista, but it should be the same on any Windows OS.

Try downloading Malwarebytes security software its Free. Then scan your lap top with it. you will be amazed at what you may find hidden in your hard drive. If you buy the full version for about £16.00 then that is even better. It will also prevent you from accidentally clicking onto suspicious web sites. Brilliant Software!

Thanks for reminding me of that Trev - I had forgotten that Google has this facility Rolling Eyes

As for the worms....

Although I'm seriously tempted to have a go at sorting the problem out myself I think I'll wait till the expert arrives tomorrow. I know it will cost me a few pounds (he is very reasonable) he can tell me if there is a serious problem or if it is just a scam to try and get me to part with money. I know it has stopped me from opening up IE and my mail so I'm sure it is a problem in which case I'm happier to let him go through the guts of the laptop to make sure it's all erased/removed completely. I would worry I hadn't got it all from system.

Meanwhile I'm still trying to add a printer to my little notebook Confused
I can't find the model on the Canon website so I can't download the drivers for it....Boo

Just done this Chris and ran the free version.
It found 26 so called infections and eliminated them all. But nothing seems to have changed with the PC.

I'm still worried about it locking up more frequently now.

Ray.

Hi Ray,
I had the Malwarebytes software recommended to me by a computer science degree holder. Lots of techie web sites highly rate it. It has stopped me from going onto suspicious websites on several occasions.
and zapped numerous nasties to boot. The software should not cause you laptop to lock up. Some thing like 4,000,000,000 people have downloaded the software, that speaks for itself. I run mine with Windows 7 operating system and security is provided by Kaspersky Pure. For maitaining the computers health I use Tuneup Utilities 2011 again brilliant software,it runs quietly in the background while your working carrying out all necessary servicing. I cannot remember the last time my computer locked up.

PS I use Google Chrome and Firefox 6 for web browsing. Even though they have improved Internet Explorer I still think it's security is pretty poor compared to the others mentoned.

I've not tried another browser for some time. Last time I tried Firefox (I think) and I found the tool bars irritating - but it might have been another browser. I'll have another look at them once lappy is fixed. Thanks for reminding me about IE's poor security.

p.s. loving using my little notebook - the Samsung NC10, the keys are so nice to the touch, very responsive. I have never really liked the Acer Aspire keypad - especially as it has a faulty 's' button which invariably does not register......really fed up with that. I must keep the notebook out and use it more often and not just when we are out and about. The screen is a little small for web browsing etc but other than that it is a great little machine.

Easiest way around this is to get a google chrome account, send the email with word attachments to the new account and open them in chrome.
