hi
we live just outside the lake district and do most of our camping in the lakes. we are thinking of changing our internet server to bt to make use of there bt fon/openzone service.
i would value any comments from members as to whether it is worth changing because we are more than happy with our present server
cheers frank
You may be luckier than me in finding hot spots. Ive been a bt fon for about 3 years . To for me I never found any of the thousands they mention. bearing in mind you have to be almost on top of one to use it is probably why as its unlikely that camping in a site somewhere that you are going to be in the 50 or so mtrs range. To be honest I dont bother anymore. I have a 3g Dongle and its great for me. But this is just my perception. others may have found them to be ok.

We are on BT Fon and have free Fon.
We no longer do much camping here in the UK but when we do we often do receive free Fon, although we do have a Vodafone Dongle for back up.
You do need line of sight and much better if you are within a few hundred yards.
Not had much luck abroad, but it may have been our locations as we are usually somewhere quiet.

1.. You dont need to change, you can buy a FONERA box and connect it to your existing syste, About £40ish...
2.. It wil be best to get a long range aerial as well to help get the signals. £42 faculty x
Dont rely on the fact that you get all this and expect to get a signal.
Like others I still have to have a vodaphone dongle in areas where you just dont get BT or FON..

Yes I have a fon unit, and I do tend to agree with you the fon access is very limited where we stay, better access in major cities, but unreliabel, you do need an external aerial like the facility x USB aerial, which dose give you extra range and thus chances of receiving a network, it's a bit of a fiddle if you are happy to play around it's a good hobby
The use of dongles might be a better way forward, yep I have them as well.... And sometimes that's a good hobby as well in the middle of nowhere where we usually stay....
To sum up stay with your ISP if you are happy with them and install a fon every little helps as they say!
If you google BT fon, you can click on a map location to show the number of BT subscribers and their position. I have just ditched Sky and gone back to BT. I was surprised when looking at the map, how few BT users there are around my house. I suppose that a lot of the younger ones do not bother with landlines nowadays and only use mobiles.
I suppose business users need landlines, so the moral is....park next to a commercial property.

I see that Sky have bought "The Cloud", who do wifi for commercial organisations, in January (news item here). I assume they wil offer it to their Broadband customers soon.

and I've had BT fon for a few years now, but haven't really used it apart from at CCC sites, where their site wifi will connect for free with BTFon.

As far as I know, the only motorhoming Oxford United supporter in Bognor.
I have just clicked on 'view available wireless networks' on my computer. The BT Home Hub is pulling in other networks that my Sky router never did. Sadly, none of them are BT and all are encrypted.
There is a question that has been bugging me.......
.....is my Sky router no good for anything now and should I bin it.
