Hello everyone.
Thinking of hiring out our motorhome to make some extra cash for our trips. Has anyone done similar or can anyone give us any advice an how to proceed. Thanks
your insurance will not be valid whilst you motor home out on hire. not sure how the person hiring from you would get insurance for a weekend and how do you check it is all valid?

Probably, the easiest way is to go with an agent, who is geared up to provide insurance whilst the vehicle is on hire. They will also take care of the business side of the booking process ie looking after marketing, taking deposits and full payment etc.
I used to help a friend who rented out his motorhome and he had it registered with at least three different agencies, as well as doing some extra local marketing himself. It was surprising just how many bookings were secured.
The quality of the agencies varied, but one I thought was pretty good was: http://www.southwestmotorhomes.co.uk/ (I have no connection with the business, other than the previous dealings with them concerning bookings). It is a family firm that is not too large to care for and look after individual owners and renters.
It's worth mentioning that the vehicle nearly always came back with some sort of - mostly minor - damage, both internally and/or externally. Renters are not generally used to operating motorhomes, so mishaps are almost inevitable. Fortunately, we didn't have anything that kept the van off the road.
Perhaps another advantage of partnering with an agent is that they should take care of the insurance excess for damage, usually £1,000 or £1,200 - and will withhold the money until agreement has been reached about any repairs. Also, if the worst happens and the van has to be taken off the road, a good agent will work to find a replacement vehicle for any forward bookings affected. Thus a bit less stressful for the owner.
a few things to consider if you do wish to hire it out:
1: what happens in the event of a breakdown? your customer will need either a replacement vehicle or onward travel, fine if your mh is still under warranty, costly if not.
2: there will be no-end of queries from customers whilst out in the mh, so be prepared and sleep with your mobile phone if this is the contact.
3: damage: as noted, your van WILL come back with minor damage if you are lucky
4: if your customer travels in France/EU, are you happy supplying the V5 log bk to them as required by law?
5: insurance, do you provide it or the customer
other than that, id say go for it, but be prepared.
or as Mike mentions above, go with an agent, but be careful.
