Hi hoping someone can give some advise. We are going to the Lincoln Show and have decided to get a solar panel fitted. I have read through some of the posts on the forum and still trying to get my head around what it all means Confused

But understand about them helping you to be more self sufficient. Who would you recommend approaching for infomation at the show? Sorry to sound dim but to me it seems to be a bit of a mine field and don't want to make any stupid mistakes.

Also how many of you use generators/inverters as well as solar, what are your opinions?

Thanks

Can't recommend anyone but go for the biggest which you can fit on your van.

Some people reckon 85watts is all you need that maybe if you don't watch tv or use a laptop.
My set up is 130watts & 110Ah battery which supplies domestic,3-4 hours tv and lights (I did replace halogens with LEDS).
I chose a large panel which even on dull days the batteries are fully charged by midday.
I bought the panel from Grant Solar supplied with brackets,6m of cable and the gland. I bought the charge controller from Hymer UK
Total bits about £400.
Snelly comes highly reccomended

I have spoke to several people about Solar panels and all have different ideas on how you approach the subject but there are formulas to roughly work out your needs on Solar panel suppliers websites , going to generators I was going to purchase one until I went to the Malvern Hills show , where I had to put up with the noise of 2 generators (on at different times ) and the smell from their exhausts ,I think they are unsociable and unhealthy and should not be used unless far away from other campers .

If you fancy a trip north I can recommend Stephen at Aire & Sun
http://www.aireandsun.co.uk/index.php

Even if you don't want to travel to see him, a phone call might be worthwhile for advice: he is very knowledgable. We had a 135W panel fitted by him in May. It feeds 2 x 110Ah batteries, plus the engine battery. We are very happy with it, but recognise that we may still need to use the generator in the depths of winter when sunlight is scarce.

I now have 4 panels adding up to 200watts. I can be confident of not running out of DC. Measure all the unused space on your roof fairly accurately. All the panels on ebay have dimensions in the listings. Work out what will fit. 80 watt panels are well priced just now so you could get 2 for under £300.
I've just been to a 5 day meet with motorroamers at Sewerby (Bridlington) and probably the only one there with full batteries on leaving despite poor weather and lots of tv with no generator.

Very impressive Techno, but what sort of extra weight do they all add up to ?

We had a 90watt added at the Newbury show and are very impressed with it. We also have 2 110 batterries. Spent 16 days and nights in France without EHU and used the van fully, charging phones, net book and watching satellite telly.
Ours was fitted by All Solar and we would recommend them. If they are at Lincoln show, go and speak to them, they don't pressurise you into a sale.
We had Ehu this last weekend for the first time since having it fitted and only used the toaster with it!

We have 2x 80w solar and still carry a Genny just encase.

We were at THS last weekend for 4 nights and were fine without the genny which was only used for a hairdryer for 10 mins
.

If you pln on camping away from mains and in the winter months I would get as many solar watts as possible and get a MPPT controller.

I will be adding another 80w panel soon along with an MPPT to update our old controller

Probably very similar to a 2k Honda and fuel?

I'd guess my 4 panels equate to 20 kg or 1kg per 10 watts and it takes up no storage space, I don't have to chain them up or worry about finding petrol or have to carry it.

The 80 watt panel I linked to is 7kg and I've bought one for evaluation. When I get back from holiday I'll collect it on Monday and if it meets my expectations I'll be ordering a few for stock and fitting for £450 all inclusive to those local to Leeds or at meets
