Hello, I have just purchased a globesat roof mounted satellite dish and was very pleased with myself but... it just dawned on me that I have a roofbox on my roof (clearly, where else would I put it Embarassed ).

Has anyone has any experience using a globesat dish mounted with some large ish obstruction near it i.e. roofbox, aircon unit etc.

Best Wishes

Matthew

I do not know your van but if you look at the globesat footprint, it is quite small. Your main problem may be finding a suitable place to fit it bearing in mind your interior layout.

Thanks Rosalan, I have a long wheel base panel van conversion so the spacig will be quite tight.

My real concern am I likely to end up blocking line of sight of the satelllite and thus not getting any signal.

I have been able to find little in terms of detail about the height of the bottom of the dish once erected to be able to identify if I am likely to end up obstructing.

Maths was never my string point and I think i slept through trigonometry Laughing

Maybe you could mount it on roof bars as far as possible away from the roof box. That way you have the best chance of not blocking it.

The other solution is turn the van round if the roof box is in the way of the satellite.

I am pretty slow at catching on but I am puzzled why you think there may be line of sight problems.
If it is erected on a pole beside the van... No problem.
If it is fixed to the roof and angled appropriately, again I cannot really appreciate your problem. For if any large box is on your roof, you just turn the van around so that the dish has a clear line of sight.
One freebie that can also be of help is the Road Pro booklet, which covers most issues regarding satellite dishes.
Good luck!
Alan

I'm quite new to this motorhoming lark and have it stuck in my head, from a particually officious site warden, that everyone must line up the same way on the pitch and it is one of those unwritten rules.

Given that I had not thought of turning the van round.

Thanks

I do understand the 'officious' warden syndrome, which is one of the reasons I almost never use club sites. The others being the expense and the mix of 'like minded' people who lack the independence that I seek.
MHF rallies and shows, Motorhome Stopovers and overseas Aires being more to my taste, where I can usually choose which way round I park my van.
We are all different in what we seek, I hope that you will find what you are looking for and have many years happy motorhoming.

Hi Biochemist

Sorry for late reply but, I have a Globesat thru-the-roof dish on my RV (and have used it for 10 years). My roof has an aircon unit nearby and various other roof-top bits and pieces but none of these causes any problems to the sat dish. The reason for this is that you point the dish to the satellite and the satellite is in the sky!! Laughing

Seriously, the pole raises the dish by about 12" to 18" (300mm to 450mm) so this elevation, combined with the fact your dish will be "looking" sky-wards, should not pose any problems.

In very windy conditions once I have locked on to the satellite I then carefully retract the pole until the lower edge of the dish rests on the roof and I find that this provides sufficient resistance to the wind blowing the dish out of alignment. Of course, in gale force conditions the wind usually wins! Sad
 Globesat - great but fiddly

Hi - we had a Globesat on a pole in our last motorhome. Never a problem on club sites even with fussy wardens. Great dish, very durable even in high winds but it can try your patience getting onto the satellite as tiny movements of the pole mean success or failure! Only other problem is the standard one of not parking under/near thick trees. Finally, suggest you mount it as near the middle of the MH as possible to avoid contact with roadside branches. Oh yes and best to mount where you can see the TV screen whilst twiddling the pole to tune in.
