We are about to go off on our very first trip in November, touring round Europe and are currently looking at Security for the Van.
We think a wheelclamp seems a good deterent and a door lock.
Can anyboby suggest a good wheel clamp, the ones we are considering are:-
Nemesis -seems really sturdy, but very heavy to carry round
Milenco -same as above
Our wheels are 16" so these 2 products come up on web searches.
What do you use/suggest?
We use a Nemesis, but I have to say we never take it abroad. I have it to look after the van on our drive at home when we are working. I don't think I've ever seen a van clamped abroad, are you planning to leave it alone on an Italian city car park for a few days?
I clamp mine for peace of mind but just use the lightest, cheapest Milenco as a deterrent. It weighs about 4 kg and folds flat so is easy to pack. I clamp the van even on camp sites here and abroad. Also have a Cobra alarm.
Unless they are going to arrive with a lowloader the likelihood of your van going missing is in my opinion negligable. There will be an immobiliser fitted as standard to your van which would take some knowledge and no little time and effort to overcome.
The most likely scenario is that it could possibly be broken into and possessions stolen. The van could be broken into by many means not only the doors. Just sit inside your van and look around there are many different possibilites and remember they will have no qualms about breaking plastic windows!
Having said that though the likelihood is low if you park sensibly and take sensible precautions.
Personally I don't take the clamp abroad, we wild camp, use aires and some sites for about 16 weeks a year. We've never had a problem although we don't tend to leave the van alone for more than a few hours. Its not something that really worries us, it's locked and, possibly more importantly, the thing you see on our avator sits between the front seats!
