i own an x reg newer shape transit van and can confirm it was welded in five places to pass its mot and although the mot station did the work to pass it....i have my doubts about welding the bracket at the back of the chassis the leaf springs were just about bolted to. To say rust had taken hold was an understatement..

would be the first place i d look were i ever daft enough to buy another...

We were driving along a country road in the somme a few years back, fully loaded.

I saw a sign ahead showing the symbol for dip in road, so I slowed right down to less than 30mph.

Drove over a dip, bump and a hump and whole chassis took a beating. In-fact, the shower tray cracked with the weight of the wine and beer load.

Always looked at the side of the van after that trip, to me there always seemed to be a curve in the body and chassis.

Happy days.

I've recently done major welding repairs to '53 and '04 plate Transits the floors rot out in the passenger side cab floor below the seats the floor is open to the weather via holes in the chassis.

As usual Ford thinks you don't need cavity wax so the van just drops apart around you.

Previous Transit was a rot box and current range is no better.

Ohh c'mon you have to be joking EVERYONE knows that Fords are far better and much less likely to rust than those rubbishy Fiats & Renaults. Wink

my Transit (built 1999) , is subject to light rust only.
when I bought it , I gave it a wax layer (Teroson spray wax)
at any critical point of the underfuselage Smile

if you are going to buy an elder Transit (e.g. from year 1995 on...)
you should remove the plastic doorstep covers to check wether
there`s rust underneath. that gives you an impression how the rest looks like...

regards
Jan
