These were the welcoming words of the landlord at the Dog and Partridge at Wrentham in Norfolk.
To give him his due, the sign clearly stated "Only food and drink purchased on these premises to be consumed here" or words to that effect.
However, when 14 thirsty, retired ex-teachers arrived in an empty rural pub at 1pm on Monday lunchtime (when they don't serve food) we had hoped for a slightly warmer response to our polite request to eat our sandwiches in the beer garden. As the landlord continued to point out "this is a beer garden not a picnic spot!"
We were annoyed that we'd already bought our drinks at that point; we certainly didn't indulge in a second round and I don't think he will get our custom again.
If anyone is thinking of eating there (it's very convenient for Peddar's Way, on the A1075 from Thetford to Dereham and has a motohome stop-over agreement) check that you don't get the condiments, serviettes or implements from the windowsill. The bar-maid readily assured us that they were only for display, so the cat which walked over them, pawed them and chewed them was not causing a health hazard.
I am sorry to say this, but, you are not English, you may be Welsh or Scottish even Irish, ou are classed as British.
I agree it is a bl**dy stupid lot of pc gone mad.
I remember many years ago when we walked in the lakes with our children (6) The youngest (twins) was 15 We ordered and he pulled the drinks The twins ordered a soft drink each, he asked how old and then said they were not allowed in his bar
Albert said Fine just put all the other drinks back!!!!

I had to read this a few times to work out the point. Then I noticed..... you went at a time when they do not serve food!!!!
In my experience, if a pub does not sell food, then they would usually be quite happy for you to cross the street to pick up pizza, or fish and chips, or indeed bring your own sandwiches.... because after all, you then buy drinks.
This seems like an error of judgement. He could have said - "well we don't usually let people eat their own food here, but as it's Monday lunchtime and we're not serving any food right now, go ahead... but make sure you all buy a second drink "
Secondly, I didn't mention how agressive the landlord was. We were all so shocked that we failed to rise to the defence of our colleague who was being directly addressed - a guy who left teaching through ill health, including a triple heart bypass. The landlord didn't know this, so I can't hold it against him, but a gentle approach of the "Sorry guys, we have a rule and I must ask you to obey it" would have been accepted - after all, we'd all spent 4 decades enforcing rules which sometimes seemed pointless (but he wouldn't know that, neither)!
Researching the local press, this guy has no previous experience of the hospitality industry and rescued this old pub after it closed following the foot-n-mouth epidemic. Having a choice between 14 customers on Monday lunchtime or none, I would have expected a more benign approach.
