a novice to solar so if this is a stupid question sorry

what does the timer function do? and what do i set it too have a morning star sunlight 20 amp controller?

I havn't got one so can't be sure but here is a link to where the operator manual is so may help. It is pdf so you can download it.

PS: I think the controller is a lighting one and lights could be connected across the load and operated for time intervals selected by the switch. Perhaps you do not have anything connected to the load [light] terminals as you are charging a battery which connects to the controller battery terminals?
