Hi all
Have just joined the forum as my wife and I are planning early next year to to purchase a suitable motorhome to initailly tour around the UK and then who knows if everything goes OK we will head South for the winter. We have previously camped and caravaned and love the great outdoors and travelling but are motorhome virgins.
I'm 72 and semi retired my wife would have retired in a couple of years but thanks to the govt changes she just missed out and now has to wait another 6 years for her state pension. So we have decided to sell everything including our interest in a small IT business, our house and cars etc buy a motorhome (under 3500kg with french bed) and to head off into the unknown. Already bought our bikes as we want to reduce our carbon footprint - so the wife says. Some of the family think we are mad others envy us in what we are doing.
A few things still to sort out - the financial side sorted but some personal issues to sort - mailing address, medical support as I'm a diabetic -tablet controlled and waiting to get answers whether I can stay with our present practice if we do not have a permanent address in the locality. Trying to be independednt of the family who are scattered around the UK.
Any way we are scouring the various web sites reading up on what other people have done and so any advice/comments always gratefully received.

Hello and welcome Todger. We have been full time for a couple of years but didn't sell up at home.

Most questions have been answered here in the full timing section http://www.motorhomefacts.com/forum-36.html

although for some things a little subterfuge might be required particularly if you are selling up. Good luck with it, Alan.

As Alan pointed out go to the specialist section.

Meanwhile, as I have said to most in your situation, be wary about selling house, especially if you have a business to sell which will presumably pay for cost of MH.

And if you still have a mortgage on the house, and you decide to let obviously the interest is tax-deductible.

You say under 3500kg. Is there a reason? I personally would not want to live full-time in anything other than an 'A' Class, because there is little choice if one wants fully-winterised. Not many 'A' Class come under 3500kg.

Anyway good luck with search, but look at some 'A' Class - you might be surprised how much extra, particularly quality, you get for your money and on the second-hand market there is not many 000's difference and they will endure.

Any Qs? Ask away.

Geoff

I'd be interested to know what you've planned for a route around Europe?

We started end of March and headed to Denmark, Sweden, Norway (to Nordkapp), Finland (trip to St Petersburg), Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and into Greece.

Timing wise we've had excellent weather throughout, hitting Norway just after the thaw and before the crowds and most of the trip through Easrtern Europe has been cloud free.

Our blog is at www.europebycamper.com - in the links section you'll find some of our favourite blogs. Mag Baz Travels I'm sure you'll find lots in common with.

Best of luck - don't forget to keep a blog yourself!

Not wishing to dampen your plans, but please make sure you have something in place in the event of your m/h breakdown and you cannot live in it.

We are full timers and our m/h is the garage and has been for two weeks.

Also make sure you take out full time insurance.

I too would warn against selling you house, instead either downsize and rent (freeing up capital), or just rent the property.

Hi
We are going to sell the house and the business this will give us the total freedom to do what we want and concentrate on enjoying travelling the highways and byways in our motorhome. We are looking forward at 72 & 58 doing what we have always wanted to do and now we will have the capital to do it. We have sorted out most of the issues and all we have to do is get the right motorhome for us.
Yes - in some people eyes this is a gamble but so is life - if it fails and it doesn't deliver what we are seeking then Yes we will buy a bungalow by the sea and live out our days saying we gave it a go. Surprised

Life is for living and as someone said today Sunday 11th at the 9/11 memorial service you only live once so take each day as it comes. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Hi we are newcomers to the site though have been motor homing for several years, however we have been offered the opportunity to rent our home for two years and we are going to full time around Europe, I have made several enquiries re the Personal insurance situation and have met a blank wall each time with either having to return to the UK every three months or an expensive 6 month policy that only allows me to return to the UK for 14 days within the 6 months? I cannot get my head around this and would be most grateful for any advice anyone can offer me as I notice AndrewandShirley say not to go without it, others I have asked say that they rely on the E111. By getting my Hymer Ins through Safeguard they give AA EU cover for the full 365. If I am a little slow in getting back it is because we are about to have a month in Germany and it will depend on wi fi connection. Confused

We have 365 full cover from Liverpool Victoria but we're both in our 20's so perhaps easier or cheaper for us to obtain. However we are not able to return at all during this period - but how would they know?

Thank you for the reply, to find out if you have returned or not all they have to do is go through the ferry and air line operators database's for your details, pain to do so but confident that in the event of a claim they would do it. We are in our 60's but all we require is a policy to cover us to travel in and out of Europe; which we are a part of; as we please without any strings attached, why do they do it? Would help if I could understand the reasoning they use to create these clauses.
