Hi, Can anyone help me please. I have just purchased a camper van for the first time, got an 1986 renault Traffic. I have sussed out how to operate the cooker and fridge (on gas), so can now cook a breakie and keep the wine and beer chilled. There is a zig unit above the fridge but I don't know how it works, there is not leisure battery, only the main one. I have been given a splitter thing to connect a leisure battery, any information on either the zig unit or connecting a leisure battery would be most helpful. Also, can anyone tell me where I can buy new covers for the front seats. Thank you. Tracey
this charger keeps a leisure battery (f fitted) topped up, it may well be that your vehicle only has the one battery and tat the back end works off the vehicle battery - not ideal as if you use it too much without charging you will not be able to start the engine.
Connecting a lesiure battery requires a suitable space to be identified first and then careful connection, with a suitable fuse to avoid potential damage to either the vehicle or the lesiure battery. There are lots of links on MHF which you can search onc you are a fully paid up subscriber.
Could I possibily ask, and I know this sounds thick!! how does the zig unit work, no lights are coming on, it shows a battery indicator advising when battery is low, but how do you charge it up? Tracey
If the unit is connected to the mains via an electrical cable, it will charge a battery that is connected to it.
The switch on the left turns it on or off, down is on, the switch on it's right decides which of two batteries it is charging (if two are connected). The only light that I recall coming on when it was operating was a green light in the on/off switch, but it is some years since I last used one!
It may be that the Zig unit has been connected to the vehicle battery or it may have been used without a battery to smooth the current, simply as a 12v supply unit while the van is connected to electrical hook up (that is not recommended by Zig).
Sadly it is not easy to give clear advice wiithout seeing it and tracing how it is wired.
I dont know what a zig 8 is, I was only told the panel was called a zig lol, the panel has a water tank level, battery indiciator, 12 volt socket, water pump and refridgerator switch and 6 replacement fuse sockets. if that helps
that might help you identify one that looks similar to one fitted in your vehicle,
you might also look through any paperwork that was supplied with the vehicle and see if you get any clues from there!
This thread on another forum might help you to understand too, but MHF has an outstanding membership who can usually answer any questions - and even if the person asking cannot identify the question!
You only have one more free post left, so I suggest you hang on to that for now and see if you can find out a little more detail, then post that and see if we can help. Subscribing the £12.50 may well prove good value though (it did for us a few years ago when we were newbies......).
