Some, elderly, Brit friends here in Spain are considering their first ever computer purchase (laptop) mainly for e-mail, Skype and online shopping from UK. They intend to buy from a local Spanish outlet (Urende) but operating system in English is not available. They have been told that once set up "one click will convert to English from Spanish". I think this sounds a bit dodgy, but know little about such matters.
Question: If it is changeable is it full function?

Many thanks.

When you buy a computer outside of UK the keyboard will be AZERTY not QUERTY as in UK.

When the new computer is switched on it will go through the setting up process and it is at this stage that you pick which language you want, you can't change it later, so be very careful.

We have just bought a new netbook from Asda for £197 and it has Windows 7 Starter Edition so have just gone through the process above. We bought it in the UK because of the keyboard.

Hope this helps.

The post above is half right.

The keyboard is the PITA as it probably will have buttons in the wrong place. If you can touch type you can convert to UK keyboard easily, but clearly the letters will be still marked wrong. You can buy a replacement or external keyboard but this is a pain.

You can change the UI language on Windows 7 into whatever you like. The supported MS way is to use MUI packs (I shudder every time I encounter this lol!)

The unsupported way is to use a download:-
See http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/15510/change-the-user-interface-language-in-vista-or-windows-7/ and http://www.froggie.sk/download.html and http://www.froggie.sk/index.html This uses the same MUI packs as MS but seems to force them on to other versions of Windows (e.g. not the Ultimate or Enterprise versions that MS support)

Also it may be possible to "wipe" the laptop with the recovery DVD they may give you and start from scratch with an English version.

This will of course not help with the keyboard issue.

By the fact they are asking this question, I assume they aren't techie, in which case I'd buy one in the UK instead and ship it to them.

Recently bought a netbook from MediaMarkt in Elche ...Interested in the samsung the assistant said I could change the language on the first boot. Got it home and no option on the language took it back to there tech department said Samsung s do not have langauge change option but the Asuss eePC does. Language option ok.. keyboard is QWUERTY but the @ commers slash are in different location than marked.
If your elderly friends are not computor savvy it could put them off forever ... you should get one from the UK could be a bit more expesive with PP but worth it

PS Mediamarkt offered to change the samsung language but as mentioned by other poster it would be unsupported. No Thanks

Agreed, best to get one from the UK. There are many keyboard variations available (English not like German (ä) not like Swedish (å) not like Spanish (ã ) not like Portuguese, characters are in different places, etc.) and if it's a laptop it's bound to be a nightmare.

Hi bought one in Spain last year after mine was stolen, a laptop I mean.It would only half convert to English kept jumping back to Spanish which was annoying the keyboard is the problem when it does that because nothing is where it says it is..ie ? can be the _ and visa versa..in the end had to pay to have it totally wiped and put back to Windows 7 as mine wouldn,t go otherwise. Just waiting for a new keyboard when we get home as this still goes over when e-mailing and want the at sign....doing it now grrrrrr
