Hi All

We are thinking of changing to a new motorhome with the above configuration but have read some negative reviews on here (mainly regarding the gearbox).
Most of the comments seem to be relating to vehicles of 3 years old or more, and there are no recent posts. Does anyone have any more recent info on this - ie have the problems been ironed out?
We are likely to be towing a small car on an A Frame and occassionally a saloon car on a full trailer.

Many thanks for any info.

Sally

Hi.....we have considered a change for some time but likewise not totally convinced on the Iveco 6 ton chassis with auto. If the Mercedes 6 ton with fluid auto was still available I'm sure we would have gone ahead. IMO the driveability of the latter comes no better. Can only quote a guy at Stratford motorhome event earlier this year who was running a late model RS Endeavour on the Iveco 6t with auto. "Superb vehicle in every way, build etc etc however the only change to his original spec. would be the manual gear box version" He was towing a trailer and found the auto just wasn't sharp enough during a recent tour through Cornwall and Devon over undulating A & B class roads. Just thought I would share this with you.......Crindle.

I would have thought the logical thing to do in that case was to use manual sequential gear selection.

There is a report >here< about a delivery company being impressed with them. I hope it is true because I have one on order.

Thanks for both replies.

Is there anyone that owns this configuration and would be happy to discuss it with us?

Thanks

Hi,

If you want to chat to me that's no problem at all, just email a number & I will call to give you my experiences thus far, most of it towing 1.5tons.

Hi Sally

We have a Carthago based on a 5.4ton Iveco with the Agile gearbox.
In the past 18months we have covered around 18000 miles.
The gearbox is easy to use, but you need to remember that is more an automated manual.
On hill starts you do need to use the handbrake, & not hold it on the accelerator as it will overheat the clutch.
Which I did on our 1 in 7 drive when it was new, you get a hot clutch warning!

The only time I would prefer a manual would be when shunting on a slope. A manual would give you more control.

If I was to be picky, when setting off from a junction the half second it takes to engage 1st from N seems like 5 seconds & if you approach a roundabout with the intention of stopping but then hit the go faster peddle just before stopping it can jerk into a different gear.

Would I buy another?
If I could not get a full auto, yes I would.

Let me know if you want any more info.

Wray

Hi all......airing the subject of the Iveco/Agile 6 ton chassis is a good posting. Especially as it seems to be the choice of many high end motorhome manufacturers. The RS Endeavour owner I refer to in my earlier posting is a motorsport enthusiast and was very knowledgeable on auto engineering, however he was towing a competition car on a trailer, maybe such weight does affect the transmission. Didn't Mercedes use an automated manual on the early 6 ton Sprinters prior to dropping it in favor of the true auto fluid gearbox ? As I say a good topic, all credit to MHF.......Crindle.
