I have just been chatting to a German chap who asked if my Sat. TV System is digital. He says digital will be required soon to pick up TV. I knew about the digital switch over for terrestrial television but assumed all satellite was digital. Not so he says. He reckons my system may need upgrading.
I have no idea and my Oyster manuals don't help, can anyone shed some light please. Thanks, Alan.
Many Eu countries have been running digital satellite for many years.
And with that came the end of analogue satellite transmiisions for those countries.
However, some EU countries still run analogue satellite channels - Germany and France being two.
By Mid 2012 (actually 30th April 2012), the German analogue channels on Astra 19 east will be shut down...and on the 30th November the French analogues on Atlantic Boird 5 west will be shut down.
This means that people using these analogue channels will HAVE to move to digital. And many of these analogue channels have been digital for several years already!
Germany is indeed turning off analogue satellite transmissions in April 2012. (The UK isnt, so please dont panic anybody else! Sky turned off its analogue signals in 2001)
To see if you are currently viewing analogue, tune to any of these channels: ARD, ProSieben, RTL, SAT.1, ZDF or BR.
Bring up video text page 198. If a message appears indicating future termination of analogue satellite transmissions, then the satellite reception is analogue. Otherwise, a message confirming digital reception will appear. In that case there is no need to act. If you are analogue, you may need a new LNB and set top satellite box.
there is also a tad of confusion in the mix caused by the naming convention of Oyster sat kit, i.e. they have the "Vision" range and the "Digital" range.
The Vision is a digital system but the "Digital" range feature built in receivers which allow the use of DiSEqC tuning i.e. you select a channel on the receiver EPG that is on Astra 2 Satellite and the system automatically aligns the dish to point to that satellite instead of you having to firstly point the dish using the controller and then selecting the channel.
