There has been a fair bit of discussion about this - some I've seen and a lot of it focussing on the security of these items either through fitting of expensive (and possibly not 1000% effective)devices as well as thoughts on "home grown" solutions.

Given that it has been said that the thieves can remove the cats in about 2 minutes in the dark and in the absence of some other better solution, has it been considered that we remove them ourselves when we get home? While not something we should be doing would it be much of an additional burden to add to our usual de-commissioning/re-commissioning routine? Personally, I'm fed up with paying large lumps of money to third parties for less than 100% effective products - not to mention insurance excesses.

Very rusty and hard to remove, probably not feasible - thieves cut them off.

If you store at home I think there are easier ways to make it physically very difficult for a thief to reach under the MH from the area of the drivers door. He needs a bit of room if unbolting as the three nuts have to be unbolted from rusty bolts.

I had the cat stolen from my Peugeot 2.2 Turbo based MH a week b4 we were due to go on a 3 week trip-panic stations. On contacting my local repairer for a replacement he said that he had recently replaced a cat on a land diesel Land Rover with a straight thru pipe so why not consider this option, in his opinion a diesel did not need a cat. After thinking about his suggestion (for abt 2secs) I booked the van in and he welded it straight at a cost of £75. I then had the van MOT'd the following week with no probs. Love to see the next tea leafs face when he/she crawls under the van.

Having had great difficulty getting to the spare on our van as it so low probably the thing to do if you are home parked is to raise the central reservasion with flags ,tarmac (dont get the tinkers on this ) or lawn so there is only about a 3 to 4 inches of clearance.....that should put them off.

Think rayc was going in this direction

I had a crawl under my MH a week or so ago while refitting my electric step, just to see how easy it would be to get at my cat........

Great I don't have one, perhaps it's just a little too old to be fitted with one, 2003 model 2.8JTD, but if it did have one then it would be very, very easy to get at it - there's loads of room under there.
