I have a Snooper s6000. The mph on the Snooper is 5-6 mph slower than the speedo e.g speedo 50mph Snooper 45mph. Which is the correct reading?

Hi,

My speedo is about 4mph fast at 50mph comparing it with the SatNav.

I believe the SatNav as all speedo's are set to read faster for some reason.

Likewise, our speedo is about 3 or 4 mph faster than satnav and so are several friends motorhomes. I believe the satnav once it is steady, it make take a second or two be accurate as it collects info from the satellites. ( I think) I often drive on motorways with the HGV,s and many have their speed governed at 56 mph. When I do this the sat nav always says 56mph and the speedo about 60 or just under. I go for mile after mile with the lorries who are obviously travelling at their max governed speed.

A simple check is to drive at 35mph in a 30mph area that has a YOUR SPEED IS illuminating sign.

Almost all factory fit speedometers read faster than the actual speed of the vehicle. That's why most police vehicles have a second, validated speedo on board. I think the law allows for speedo inaccuracy if they are over but forbids the manufacturers to under-report the vehicle speed.

At a constant speed, on a level road, the sat nav will give an almost perfect speed reading.

It is often interesting in average speed control areas. Those with their Sat Navs running pass those using their speedo's, including myself. That is where you discover that as you overtake, all the others running on SatNav speeds, are travelling at the same speed that you are. Smile

Motor vehicle speedos are designed specifically to read faster than actual.

Vehicle speedos (and it appears particularly van speedos) are often a bit optimistic.

Sat navs, on the other hand, report speed (and for that matter location) based on satellite triangulation and are pretty much completely accurate.

When I am driving the van I rely entirely on the speed that the sat nav tells me.

And the flash from behind will ensure that you get written proof shortly after in the post! Laughing Laughing Laughing

My TomTom also reads 5mph lower than the car speedo.
