At 14.39 this afternoon we received a telephone call from someone who asked for me by name & who said he was from "your broadband". He said there was a problem with my security settings which had been detected at the server, or was causing problems at the server. (He had an Asian accent & was somewhat difficult to understand). I asked him which broadband he was from & he replied "TalkTalk".
As we use TalkTalk for both landline & broadband, when he said he was from TalkTalk I was reassured & went along with his request to go to a website - www.teamviewer.com. He then asked me to click on the left of this site, which I saw was to give remote access to my computer. I declined to do this & he became angry & said I was wasting his time & so he would disconnect my broadband. He repeated his request for me to click on the site & I declined again. He repeated his threat & I hung up the phone. I then called TalkTalk Customer Service department to report this matter.
I have since reported this to TalkTalk by e-mail.
I would like to know how this individual knew my name (our phone is ex-directory) & that I was with TalkTalk. The phone number that came up on our phone was 02785642361. I tried ringing this number but it is unobtainable.
Anyone have any knowledge of this scam? It's not one I've ever heard of.

This is quite a common scam. They take control of your computer, show you some false errors, and then charge you £70 or thereabouts to install some software which 'fixes' your computer.

I don't know how they got your name and provider, but my elderly neighbour got stung by them, and they're on BT.

It's possible that they didn't actually know the name of your provider, hence originally saying they were from 'your broadband'. TalkTalk was perhaps a good guess.

They also called me. I knew immediately it was a scam. I had some friends around at the time so put him on speaker and really had some fun winding him for about 20 minutes.

Sad as it may sound it give us some pleasure.....simple minds Laughing

Had a similar call recently. Kept them talking for over 30 minutes while I pretended to follow their instructions. They even waited patiently while I "rebooted" my computer several times as they could not succeed in gaining access to my PC.
Took great joy when they eventually gave up and hung up.
Their bill, not mine.

Another question, how did they manage to display a fake number on our caller display phone? If it had said "Number withheld" I might have been more suspicious to start with.

We treat all of that type of call as a scam.
When possibly the same asian person rang on Monday I suggested that 'he was obviously quite clever and should get a real job'.
Normally we just put the phone down...so he got the privelege of a full sentence before being cut off.

Your names, telephone numbers, addresses, family members, residents plus a lot more are available to the whole world.......I'm a bit suprised that everybody doesn't know that.

As a follow up to this I found:
http://www.actionfraud.org.uk/
I don't know what can be done but I've reported it anyway. The more people who report these scams, the more likely they are to be caught.

This may explain the origin of these calls.
