Can anyone out there please help us?

We are about to purchase our first new (to us) motorhome in the UK, and bring it back to Spain. Apparently we must insure with a Spanish motorhome insurance company because that is where we live now. Unfortunately neither of us have enough language skills to do this by phone or on line. Is there anyway around this problem.

I have rung several English car insurers out here, and they either don't insure motorhomes or will only offer third party. One would offer insurance but only for 'vans up to 6.2mtrs long Sad

I don't know if Linea Directa do Motorhomes - if so, you can communicate with them in English.

Otherwise, you must be able to find an Agent who will do this down in your part of Spain

As an asside, before you do purchase. Are you sure it is wise to buy from the UK. I assume you are a Spanish resident and should be driving a Spanish registered vehicle. Might simplify the insurance also.

Have you researched the implications of buying in the UK and importing into Spain?

You could be facing very expensive import charges when you want to register the vehicle in Spain.

Is it RHD - if so, you may find very great difficulty in a) registering and b) passing the ITV (Their MOT).

It will be a lot easier and cheaper to purchase in Spain.

We live in Malaga Province and insure our MH with Abbeygate Insurance, who I think are based in Fuengirola, maybe Marbella. They provide a full range of cover and we chose Fully Comprehensive with Bonus protection etc. All of the staff are either British or fluent English speakers. See link below.
Our other cars are insured with Linea Directa (Direct Line) but they do not insure MH's.

http://www.abbeygateinsure.com/index.html

There is another company based in Zaragoza but they are Spanish speaking only and only provide 3rd Party cover for MH's repeat 3rd Party only.

Other posters draw your attention to the cost of importing a vehicle into Spain and having done so I can confirm that the costs are awful !! PM me if you wish details etc and I have Contact with a company, in Alhaurin, who could help if you decide to import. Current rate for import tax is 16% of value on a scale decided by Spanish Hacienda.

Edited to add:

By law, if the vehicle is in Spain for more than 180 days you must register in Spain which then unleashes all the import costs. You might not be here for this period but if the MH is....then the law applies.

Thank you to all who have given their suggestions. We looked at LHD vehicles but non had the layout we wanted (bench front seats, rear kitchen and bathroom) LHD in the UK with this layout is a rare commodity! Unless we take a big hit and loose our deposit, we have made our bed now and must sleep in it, making the best of it, I think.

Abbeygate insured our RHD car when we moved out here, and we returned and sold it in the UK when it required an MOT.

We have no wish to be 'illegal' with our motorhome, and will continue to tax it and MOT it yearly in the UK, (we plan to be there July and August each year). I don't see how else we can manage the situation.

We also understand Spanish authorities will not allow us to register the vehicle as the habitation door opens to the offside of the vehicle in Spain! However, we do intend spending a great deal of time out of Spain, touring other countries in Europe.

You cannot reregister a RHD motorhome in Spain, nor a van come to that. It has some thing to do with not being able to see properly at junctions.

Hi

surely if you are keeping your MH legal in UK, ie with tax and MOT you have a UK address for registration purpose. If that is the case why dont you insure it in UK with a company that offers 365day cover in Europe eg Saga ??
