Up until recently I used AVG, no probs at all, but someone on here suggested it slowed down the computer, and advocated Avast instead, so I duly deleted AVG and installed Avast, all went well until about 3 weeks ago, when I couldn't keep my laptop on for more than a few hours at the most, it going to BSOD for many and varied reasons whenever it felt like it.
So I've just picked it up from PC World after having to take it in to get it sorted, they advised me it had some really nasty viruses on it.
So, not being able to afford to keep going to PCW or buy a main stream virus program, what's the best way forward.
In the meantime I've reinstalled Avast, is it possible to run more than one of these free antivirus programs, or even advisable or worth it.
PCW said that even the very best would only ever be about 70% effective against the newer viruses anyway.
I also used to use AVG (free edition) but changed a couple of months ago as the program is just getting too heavy in terms of processing power requirements. I've switched to Microsoft Security Essentials on both my W7 desktop and my XP laptop and I'm happy with the performance. It's a free download.

Like you, I went from AVG free to Avast free about 3 years back - on the recommendation of a local computer engineer - and have been happy with it since.
I have heard that some of the paid-for antivirus products are known for slowing a pc down - McAfee in particular - but whether there's any truth in this I've no idea.

No longer quite so new to all this but still loving it!

Remember PC World exists purely to sell you things. And that their employees are schooled to push such as anti-virus software and warranties, both of which you can have without paying.

I also use Microsoft Security Essentials, at home as well as on all my computers at work. Have done so for nearly 18 months with out any problems, since changing from AVg to Norton ( which was the worst by far)..
I guess in time all these mischief makers will find ways to beat any reliable antivirus programme.
But so far MS hasn't done badly.
Sorry but Mrs'D will appreciate that remark

The thinking on AV software is unchanged in that any product is only as good as the latest update. The speed and quality of that update is everything if you want the best protection.
You then have to ask which providers have the resources, motivation and knowledge to provide that service as it's only when a new and particularly nasty virus surfaces that you find out who the best are.
I admire people who provide these services free but I have to wonder if they can provide a product that is as good as that from the big players.

(When anything breaks/wears out/needs renewing, be it 10 days old, 10 months or 10 years, Dago says "well, it hasn't done badly" - drives me mad )

I stpped using Norton a few years ago as it was clunky and ate memory etc. and I used some of the free stuff like AVG but I was always concerned about how good it was likely to be.
I've started using Norton again as I was advised all of the above had been ironed out and i wouldn't have problems, to date I'd agree with it.
