I hope I haven't missed the foreign language forum, is there one? If not has it ever been proposed, considered, introduced, rejected or failed?
A thread on learning French was on the go in the last few days but I can't find it now, it might have been in the off topic and been automatically deleted. It would be good to share opinions on what's good and what's not for each language and to get a bit help from those who can speak a de lingo. It might even encourage some to learn other languages and not rely on foreigners speaking English.
I was given a French Course from Lidl some time ago and I have just started doing it in the last few days. While I am finding it difficult at least I can now say ' Je ne comprends pas ' like a native.
A very useful tool but the internet already has plenty of them where answers can be found to most questions. Just try googling what ever you want to say, Alan.

Hi Alan
I think it would be useful. Over the last few months there have been several threads on here all language related. One MHF member needed a translation for French medication, they Googled it but the answer wasn't clear but they got the answer on MHF.
I have a French mate and regularly use on-line translators to email him and so does he but we both end up laughing at the translations but accept it's better than nothing. I don't expect MHF to teach me but it would be good for reference and to have courses recommended and it is relevant to travelling in a Motorhome isn't it?
I have just Googled 'reviews of the best French language courses' there was 619,000,000 results, MHF will be quicker and more helpful.
The only drawback I can see is the extra confusion for newcomers (and some established members ) of an additional 25 or so forums . . . when we receive frequent complaints that MHF is already very complicated and difficult to navigate.
OK - tongue in cheek to some extent, but from past experience I guarantee that once begun, somebody would be sure to want a language forum for every "travel" forum already in existence. (The latter exist only as a result of previous requests for their inclusion!)
It sounds like a good idea in principle, but I think the only practical solution would be a single forum entitled "Translation Please" - or something similar. (Not sure about that either - please read on. )
Alternatively, why not post a "Translation Please" request in the appropriate existing sub-forum for that country? Then the readers would know at once if they had a knowledge of that language - without having to open the post to find out.
There's no way MHF can become a language learning forum, but I do agree that requests for accurate translations can be very useful indeed!
Florence is French by birth and upbringing, and is a French Tutor by profession.
If anyone requires any translation, either from French to English or visa versa, please either PM me or, if you feel that the info would be of benefit to other forum members, drop the request on here (but still PM me that it is here so that Flo can pop in to translate)
I can only speak of my difficulty in learning a foreign language to the point of fluency knowing all the pitfalls and recognising why its a far more dificult a mountain to climb than courses,cd's or books ever bother to convey never mind really help you get ahead of the task....
The key to learning seems to be a "will to" way beyond that you think you have have now and a simple immersion in the chosen language and it can be done in 9 months just as i managed.....
Sadly my parents were an example of not having had the "will to" having spent 30 years in their chosen country and in the end still didnt understand enough to realise what they had been diagnosed with and i was left to convey unpleasant news.....
