Not sure if this is the right place for this but here goes anyway.

We are currently touring in France. 9m motorhome plus towing a car so usually fill up at the HGV pumps. Most garages now require you to leave a debit or credit card at the kiosk as evidence of your ability to pay before they turn on the pump.

I filled up on the A10 near Bordeaux and within an hour someone used my card details to buy Ł2500 of electrical goods even though it was in my pocket at the time. Nat West fraud team advise me that if a fraudster has the security code from the back of your card, the card number, your name and your registration number they can get your date of birth. Don't know how (for obvious reasons they would not tell me) but this information is all the fraudster to re-set your passwords and use the card for internet purchases.

Has anyone else suffered from this and does anyone have a solution to buying fuel at HGV pumps at home and abroad without depositing a credit/debit card?

We work as a team. I fill the vehicle, my wife shows the card and has the card in her possession in the pay booth but does not hand it over. She does not hand the card to the assistant.

By working this way the vehicle is never left unattended either.
 Card fraud.

Apparently you should never let the card out of your sight. On the AP7 Spanish toll road a couple of toll booth workers got sacked a while back for swiping cards in a fraudsters machine, apparently it reads all the info off the card then they sell the details to the "bandits". It's a bad world we live in. tuk-tuk.

In the past we have specified the amount we want on the HGV pump and left euro note to cover,.

If you tell them you wish to pay by card they will wait till you come back.

normally though my wife goes in whilst i fill up

My mate had this done to her card. The banks don't/won't tell you but when the card is put through a card reader all your onfo is there including passwords or numbers hence the problems with chip and pin. He knows this as his brother is in CID.

I've never known that in all the times I've filled up. If I came across it I'd find a different supplier.

Hope your bank reimburses ok

It's very common when using the HGV pumps - same in the UK.

I send Mrs O in to pay (sometimes she makes a mistake and uses her own credit card instead of the joint one - worth it just in case:) ).

John
