Hi we brought our elddis autoquest 130 just over a month ago and been away once in it to the isle of White which was great fun! We are sorting it out so we can rent it out the cheapest I can get insurance for self drive customers is £25 per day is that good this is going to be 25 percent of what we will charge does that sound about right ?

Welcome Jamie,
Personally I would not hire out my motorhome.
But to get a rough guide to prices all your competitors will have web sites with prices.

Best of luck

HI Sussexmotorhome,

£25 is about average for insurance from other motorhome rental agencies, i think you might be pricing yourself high though, most of the agencies charge around £75 - £80.
We did hire ours out but have now stopped as the little damage being done to the van regulary was costing a fortune to fix as it would cost less than the excess.

Cheers
Waggie

Another one who would not hire his MH out. Just think how rental cars are treated !!!

The cost of repairs and the loss of value due to mileage will probably outweigh the income.

Think VERY carefully before you go any further.

Hi and welcome

As said above, think very carefully before you go down the route of hiring out, something which you obviously enjoyed on your first trip.
£700 a week seems about right in low season, but the disrespect that will be treated to your motorhome, surely, even for that money would never be worth it.

And adding to all the previous comments, not everything revolves around money.

On the 4th day of my first trip I hit an overhanging metal gutter and made a small groove in the surface of the roof - nothing serious and readily fixed using fibreglass filler, but the emotional effect meant that my kids will not borrow the MH unless I drive it. Even then, they fail to treat it EXACTLY as I do.

Becoming emotional over a piece of metal and glass is ridiculous and it grieves me to see all of that "real estate" standing on my drive day after day. However, like the others, I will not rent it out, because I know even the most careful user will appear to be an abuser.

Good luck - Gordon

Been there done that, will never do it again, Jo public are a menace and just ignorant as regards caring for other peoples property.
But no matter what you read on hear I expect you will go ahead and try it.
On some cheap hire insurances it is the customer who is the policy holder and you will have to rely on them to fill in forms etc.
good luck.

I think you`ll get fed up with the idea fairly soon, paying through the nose for insurance and having to book it into bodyshops and motorhome dealers to repair damage you`ll soon come to the conclusion that everone else is earning a better living off your back,do you have a backup plan if your van is damaged and booked to go out that week ?? also having owned 2 Elddis vans i know the aluminium panel work is wafer thin and marks so easily....i do wish you the best of luck with your venture if you do decide to go through with it though.

Friends of ours bought a brand new van which meant they would have to rent it out some of the time to help with re payments.

At the moment they are waiting for 5 claims to go through their insurance company and that is 5 different customers.

They rarely get to use the van now and don't really see it as their own any more.

They get fed up of having to pack and unpack each time they need to use it as they can't store their own belongings in there as you would normally.

They really wish they had just gone for an older van and had some fun out of it.

Mandy
