There's a hot rumour going around in Spain, that new satellites are to be introduced with a narrower and more directional beam width. The upshot being that free to view UK channels will no longer be visible outside the UK.
Can any of the professionals who contribute to this forum comment on the facts and how this will affect Motorhome sat systems?
If you have a chat with pcandsatguy he'll be able to up date you, he lives near vencalia or contack him on www.pcandsatguy.com Jon is very informative and helpful....
I don't think anyone knows what if anything the introduction of the new satellite at 28E will have on UK TV services. If anyone does I would like to know as well!
You could try reading the BBC blog >here< but I think this is written for UK viewers not those on the Continent.
Another source of information (some maybe speculative) is >The Digital Spy<
There is a Forum for expats somewhere but cannot find it at the moment.

Ok it is >here< and from there you can navigate to the 2D forum. I have had a quick look but don't think there is anything positive there at all.

There is a new satelliet, 1n, that will be in operation later this year.
It is there to provide temporary additional and back up frequencies.
It has 3 beams, 2 wide, and 1 narrow. This narrow beam is estimated to be the same as Astra 2d, but until channels start to apper noone knows for sure.
It is thought that the "free to view" sky card versions of ITV1 and Five, Five USA and Five8 will go free to air by the end of the year, and move onto 1n. Rumour. As is the rumour that more HD channels will appear (Film4HD is a fave rumour!)
The 3 curent Astra 2 satellites at 28 east are due for replacement over the next few years. What beams they will have and what those beams footprints is anyones guess. SOme beams may be worse than 2D, some may be as per Astra 2a south. Noone outside SES Astra will really know. Yes their "narrow beams" may be more narrow that Astra 2d currently is, but then satellites are more powerful and the overspill may again be more than anticipated.
As the enw satellite have wide and narrow ebams, not all channels will be lost. In fact many of the free to air chanels are on Eurobird, not affected by these changes by Astra.
The recent move by the BBC of the News, parliemant and alba, is, they say due to cost cutting, they can save 20m a year by closing down one transponder - unrelated to new satellites.
Unfortuntly rumours like this spread, and even when presented with the facts, people believe the rumours over the facts. Look at 10 years (or so) ago when the BBC channels moved to 2D..."oh you will no longer get BBC in Spain"...but with a suitably sized dish you can. In Cyprus or Greece 4m dishes are the norm to get BBC...they may suffer more than us in Spain, we can go to 4m dishes, they may struggle to go bigger if the signals do get worse for them.
Thanks Satandpcguy that's a good summing up of the current situation and very helpful. I have a 1.9m dish on my house in SW Spain so just have to wait and see what develops - I doubt my chimney will cope with a 4m dish......the van certainly won't!!!!!
