It has been a couple of years since this topic seems to have been dealt with and things change very quickly.
I am looking for the cheapest dongle that I can use at home and abroad.
Asking everyone I have met recently creates more questions than answers.
After a month, it seems you lose any credit, or maybe I am wrong.
Go abroad and it costs a lot to use.
Best to buy a Simms card when out of the country.
Use "3" it is the cheapest.
I like to take my Netbook with me, to keep in touch with MHF (for example) but I am not using it every day. It would be nice to send the odd photograph or personal email but does this mean I have to risk losing credit if I am not using it all?
Alan
thats a good question like yourself you think your doing the right thing by asking people when your on your travels but it gives you more questions than an answer so will be keeping an eye on the repleys you get because like you i like to browse when in france and keep in touch and load photos ect but not up to speed with all the gizzmo's you can get now good luck

Actual Alan, this topic is dealt with on an almost weekly basis.
The bottom line is at present there is no 'one' solution for home and abroad, a UK mobile broadband sim card is uneconomical to use abroad.
If you want to be able to check e-mail, browse MHF and send the odd picture these are all things you can do with a smart phone and Vodafone Data Traveller. Costs are £2/day without contract or £10/mth on top of a contract starting at £6/mth (minimum term 30days to 12 months depending on the deal). This gives you 25Mb of usage and allows you to stay connected 24/7 and receive e-mails in real time without having to 'check' them. In addition you can call the UK or receive calls for a 75p connection charge for a maximum of 60 minutes which is almost as cheap as Skype.
Many members have tethered their phones to their laptop to take advantage of the 25Mb (you can't use it in a dongle) without incurring any additional costs - but this is against the T&C's so consider it a loophole rather than a solution.
The other option for short term usage is TEP Wireless (search the forum for TEP). One member is trailing it now. It is essentially a dongle (although it has a battery and you connect to it via wifi) and prices and data vary depending on duration and country visited.
The remaining option is a local sim, which other members might be able to help with, or Wifi which is a bit luck of the draw if you can find a connection where you stay or drive around looking for one.
As Addie has posted, this subject is debated pretty frequently. If you search on "dongle" as a keyword search it throws up 914 threads!
My view is a 3 sim / dongle in the UK - I have O2 and vodafone sims as well and find 3 far better outside urban areas. Abroad, use wi-fi if possible and / or Vodafone data traveller.
I think it you stayed "connected" 24/7, you would use your 25mb very quickly.
How do you work that out? I'm afraid you're wrong on that count.
I have a Blackberry and as such any e-mails (from 3 different accounts) are 'pushed' to my handset as soon as they arrive on the mail server.
The same for my RSS Feeds, Facebook, Blackberry Messenger, Windows Messenger, Stock Ticker, Twitter etc. I also update my GPS location automatically every 5 minutes. On top of that I open several attachments and send / receive a couple of photos a day.
So far after 6 months in Europe and using Data Traveller I have only exceeded the 25MB limit once - with all the above running from 7am until midnight.
What does that tell you? Well, it's not a data hungry iPhone that's for sure but a phone is going to consume data a lot more economically then a laptop.
