Hi everyone from an x tugger, brand new to motor homing, so started off with something cheap n reasonable, a fiat ducato 2.5 diesel, swift royale 540, 1994, she's an old girl with 51000 miles ( unlike the wife who's got a bit more ) glad she can't use a computer!!!!!, anyway looking at the paper work she had a cam belt change in 2005 at 38000 so by age she needs one now, I live in south Wales Newport, there are plenty of commercial garages but I think would rather use a specialist motorhome garage, can anyone recommend one in my area, thanks

Hi Goldfish,

I don't know Newport at all (apart from the junction of the A449/M4), so can't recommend anyone to change your cambelt.

However, welcome to MHFacts and congratulations on your new purchase. I hope that you have many happy years touring with her.

Cheers,

Jock.

Also welcome, as regards work on your engine, whatever the 'base' vehicle is ie. fiat/peugot/ford/merc. those are the garages to look at besides a reliable competant 'small guy'.

Use your local garage as its the cab end and that is just the same as a normal van.

Hi

I,ll second Jocks sentiments and welcome you.

Ask around and try to get recommendations of a good local garage that can accommodate your vehicle.

Paul.

Hi Goldfish and welcome.

My own thoughts would be to use a commercial garage as, underneath it all, your van is just a Fiat Ducato and most commercial garages will have experience of changing cambelts on them.

The only "specialist motorhome garage" that I know of in the South Wales area are Lee and Turner in Bridgend. They are a motorhome dealership and a Fiat Professional dealer. Only problem is that you will pay main dealer prices!

Hopefully someone may have some other suggestions.

As already stated, this service does not require a Motorhome specialist but it does require one big enough to accomodate your vehicles height and weight.
Better the garage you can trust than the ones with most credentials.
I would also not hesitate to have the cambelt changed asap.
Welcome to the Forum!
Alan

Hi,

Don't you think you are being a bit over cautious? 13k miles and 6 years is, in my opinion, rather early to be worrying about new belts.

If it helps my 2.8 td vans belt was changed after 30k miles and 10 years, my 8 year old Berlingo is on 90k miles on the same belt and my Wifes 10 year old 40k miles Saxo is on the same belt.

I'd give it at least a couple more years.

I think the Fiat recommendation for low mileage vehicles is 5 years. I'm sure many vehicles can do double that on a belt but you have to consider the cost of a belt replacement against the potential cost of a major engine rebuild if the belt does go. I know which I'd rather do.
