Looking at getting a Smart car and I am confused by the gearbox terms like 'soft touch', 'soft tip', 'paddle' etc.

Can anyone tell me if all Smart cars have a Fully Auto gearbox mode or in some do you have to move the gear lever?

Need one with full auto in case the other half has to drive.

Cheers for any help you can provide.

My 59 diesel passion has the choice of auto, or by pressing a button on gear lever it can be used as a sequential manual, but still no clutch.
I use it in auto always as I'm to lazy to use gear lever.
Some models differ to this.
Cheers

All Smarts have an automated clutch, so even with the (manual) there is no clutch to operate. The Soft Touch gearbox is a manual in that you will need to select the gears up and down sequentially. This means that to change up, you move the gearlever forwards. To change down, you move the gearlever backwards.
The Soft Tip (standard on all Passions) is an automated version of the Soft Touch. With Soft Tip, you can press a button on the gearlever and all gear changing will be done for you. You can also press the button again to turn the gearbox into a manual (Soft Touch).

Would recommend you fo for a Passion, more spec and auto box. I had one for 7 years, the lowest depreciating car I have ever owned.

A further thought, if you are going to tow the Smart on an A frame make sure you put the gear lever into 'N' and not 'O'.

Unfortunately the Diesels are a little out of our price range. Now looking for a 2003 or newer Passion coupé or convertible with full auto and 700cc, I fancy the convertible, misses not so sure.
Maybe looking at one tomorrow but not sure about 700cc car with 72,000 miles on clock!!!

Thanks for all advice.

We were fortunate and got our 54 passion convertible 2 years ago with only 22,000 miles and a (very) full service history

We are both big people - I'm 6'2" and 18 stone - and we love the Smart

We pull it on a braked A frame having previously pulled the Harley in a box trailer.

I know this is sacrilegious but... I actually prefer taking the Smart when we go to France (sorry HOG Shocked )

No need to get changed etc, just jump in the car in flipflops, T shirt and shorts, open the top and off you go

Without being in the car, the convertible roof opens with the remote key - very cool - in both senses...

Tows dead easy - go for it - you will not regret it

Cheers

Dave

I heard of a bolt on attachment for smart cars a few years ago, basically a couple of brackets under the body, and a length of 75 x 50 rectangular section with a tow hitch on it, inserted under the car from the rear to make the Smart into a trailer.

I couldn't find one on Google though.
