The time has come for me to do some serious learning

Cant download onto Sat nav info on aires ect

No nothing about software, even my faculty x has never worked:(

can when lucky resize photos but now they're all over the computer and its hit and miss to find them again

Have a son who will, in passing, sort out immediate problems but never explains how he did it--no time mum Sad

Is there a good book that I could use to learn the steps on how to do these things that is a simple step by step guide for idiots

Its becoming very frustrating

Take one thing at a time and ask on here and then we can do a "By numbers" for you.

You can get "....for Dummies" books which are the best of their kind.

But we have plenty of Dummies on here and I am one dummy that will help if I can.

Hi,

I can't think of one particular book that will give you the skillset for all the above type situation (though maybe take a look at the xxxxxx for dummys titles).

It may be worth you seeing if you can get on a local CLAIT Course.

Good Luck

The best way to learn is trial and error combined with generous helpings of google. If there is something that you want to do then it is almost certain that it is possible. Just google it and you will find out how to. Also don't be afraid of doing something wrong. It is very difficult to do lasting and irreparable damage to a computer and if there is any possibility of that, then you will almost invariably get a warning dialogue box asking you if you want to do what you've just tried. Also don't be overly worried about viruses and such like. So long as you've got an up to date virus checker then you will be unlucky to catch something unpleasant.

I have run courses for absolute beginners and you could often find free courses on offer. I'm a little out of touch now and used to be a tutor for CLAIT courses which rather put off absolute beginners because they had an "exam" at the end. This initially put off some of my course members but in fact nobody ever failed!

I don't think I'd start with a CLAIT course but places that offer CLAIT will probably have an absolute beginners course. The CLAIT courses do cover, word processing, databases, spreadsheets and other aspects of computing so will be the answer once you decide which areas to focus on.

Information about courses including CLAIT.

The BBC has long had an input on something called WEBWISE
BBC Absolute Beginners

Might be a place to start? If nothing else you may find you are not an absolute beginner after all! BBC has links to other places to learn.

Google has a free organiser for photos called Picasa which also allows you a reasonble level of editing as well as organising your photos. It can even begin to recognise people you have named (or tagged) in your photos. You can organise your own computer files with the software but you can also create and share albums on the internet. Windows Live has a similar product which again is free. The Google version is available from the link below. Both Picasa and Windows Live Photo Gallery get good reviews

Free download from

The Windows Live Photo Gallery Link

Windows Live version

I use the Windows Live version to organise my own photos which also has face recognition like Picasa but also use the Google version of Picasa to share albums on the Internet. In your position if you are a Google user, especially if you have a Google mail account, I think I'd choose Picasa. You only need one, not both products.

Both products above should have all you need to organise and edit your photo files without having to buy any other software. Both the links have extra information to help you choose and the Google link has a demonstration video to watch.

If you choose Picasa to sort your missing photos, it would be a good thing to start with "your passing son" because once it is installed and makes its first scan of your computer then the albums will be organised, photos found and then you'll be able to carry on once he has left!! Watch the demo video a couple of times to see what it does.

The "Dummies" series books are fabulous and worth the small expense!
