Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask for newbie advise but I need it LOl

We live in the Midlands and we are doing a try before buy, hiring a motorhome next week. We are going to see friends in Wick, J'o Groates.

Its just my other half and me plus the dog (yorky)

We pick up the van on the Monday, travelling from the Midlands. Our first stop is Anglesey then on the Tuesday we are going to make our way to Wick, where we want to stay Thursday and Friday Evening.

A final stop on the saturday before handing the vehicle back on Sunday.

I would like to know where we could stay on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. I am looking for cheap and cheerfull, basicaly want to give the motorhome a good test.

appreciate any itinary suggestions

BC

Welcome and enjoy!

When you have your own van, no doubt you will enroll with one of the many organisations associated with camping or parking up overnight.
In addition to the better known Caravan Clubs you may then wish to investigate joining Motorhome Stopovers or BritStops who have hundreds of free parking places to use overnight.
As you may be aware in the UK, unlike the rest of Europe, motorhomes are not generally welcomed by every town with open arms. In the meantime, I am sure someone will know of a suitable place for a hired van to stop.
Enjoy all and have fun.
Alan

You'll find in Scotland that there are a lot of places you can wild camp.
Find a layby of a quiet road or near a loch and just park up for the night.

Hi BC and welcome to the forum Very Happy

That's not a bad journey for starters, 500 plus miles from Anglesey to Wick, you'll certainly be used to driving a motorhome when you get back!

We covered a lot of that from where we live in Chester back in April.

You could stop around the Borders (nice site in Peebles) on the Tuesday, Rosemarkie on the Moray Firth (dolphin spotting) on the Wednesday and maybe Northumberland on the way back.

Some long drives but if you take all day over them you'll be fine. Plenty of chance to stop and have a look around.

Have a good trip.

Hi and welcome

I would make the first day quite a shortish journey so that you can get used to driving the MH and also set up in the light. You don't want to be grovelling around in the dark trying to fill up with water etc.

You can use Ukcampsites.co.uk website to do a map search for a site but perhaps somewhere like this would be suitable - http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=3201

Have a great time and don't forget to make the bed up BEFORE you go to the pub.

Milly

And when you get around to thinking about crossing the channel get an ACSI Book [MHF Link] (see Outdoorbits.com) or Vicarious Books website for info. It's a must for off-peak travel in Europe. BUT you have to buy the book and it sells out early in the year only £12.50.

I just remembered the distillery in Wick. I don't really like the whiskey myself but the Old Pultenay Liqeuer is lovely stuff. Not a bad price either (about £16) considering you can easily spend over £200 a bottle there.

If you like a taste there're plenty of other distilleries on the way up.
