I'm sure I've seen (or dreamt about!) a safe that is designed to fit under the seat of the Ducato.

Tried a search but apparently nothing previous on this forum.

Any ideas?

Yes! You are correct.
A small firm produced a metal plate with a lock that fitted onto the front of the passengers seat. Sadly they stopped trading a few years ago but a friend or member of the family was to be seen at the last couple of Motorhome shows with a couple of examples of their wares.
I cannot speak with any certainty about this but in a conversation with him, I gather that it may still be possible to obtain them or they will make them.
Alternatively you could get them made yourself if you know the right people, all they comprised of was a slightly oversized metal sheet that fitted over the space below the front seat, with two welded clips at the bottom to ledge inside the hole. At the top was a welded on lock that when locked, the tongue fitted inside the top of the hole onder the front seat. Very simple and effective.
The one I had would not fit my Boxer so I bought a safe that is fixed into the van, which could be a cheaper and better option.

Alan

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the advice.

I suppose there are probably easier places to position a safe than under the seat and B & Q offer some cheap ones that may go at the back of a cupboard. Main problem could be anchoring to something substantial.

Regards,

Richard

I have seen a small safe fitted
under a rear seat
He just bolted through the side of the safe into a flat bar on the seat frame. it was bolted to the flat bar and therefore should not weaken it at all.

neat job

Hi
I have a safe bought from halfords made for wallets and sat navs etc. Its secured by a metal cable thats looped round a secure part of the seat and locked to the box. It then fits in the space under the seat so no one knows its there
It holds my passports and vehicle documents and cant bee seen as I keep my hi vis coat rolled up in front of it so no one knows theres a safe there.

it cost about £25 from as i say Halfords.

Yes, there is a proper 'safe' available to fit perfectly under the Ducato seat (not just a 'plate' as Alan suggests).

I'm sure with some googling you can find a UK supplier. I just typed Ducato Safe and this was on the first page:

http://www.caravantechnik.de/product_info.php?products_id=1505

By far the best place to locate a safe and big enough to take a laptop and other valuables and much harder to remove / make a mess of trying to remove. Stick a high voltage sticker on it and it could easily be a fuse box or some electrical gubbins Wink

Probably not Richard.

Experience speaking here. Wink Our safe is sunk in the floor under a side seat (where most of them are located) and it's a pain in the backside. Every time we want to use it we have to lift the seat cushion off, raise the seat base, haul out all the stuff that is stored there . . . . . . . . Shocked Shocked

If I had this experience when I ordered the van I would have asked them not to fit the safe at all, and I would have made a flap as described by Alan. I would have fixed it with strong hinges and shear bolts rather than risk using the welder in the van! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Access would then be much easier, and the safe would be just as secure, if not more so. A really determined thief will get your stuff whatever you do - a van safe is mostly a deterrent against the opportunistic scrote, but a substantial steel plate across the front of the underseat space would take a bit of breaking into.

I utilized one of the wardrobes, perfect place, bolted beneath onto a metal sandwich that holds it all in place.

Easy access no bending down, and can still use the top of the safe to store items on.

Presumably a back plate too Dave, since the rear plastic cover pops off and exposes the under seat contents!

For the sake of what £150 the 'proper' safe has to be worthwhile for piece of mind alone in my view. Its both easily accessible for use and secure enough to withstand an attack. A German dealer had a video showing people attempting to get in one and while this was of course marketing material it did seem to withstand it well - perhaps better than a plate would?

Laptops don't appear to be covered on a number of MH policys (Safeguard for example) so its a small price to protect what is for us a valuable bit of our touring kit. Smile

I've seen the results of a safe being removed from a wardrobe with a crowbar - the theifs smashed the whole unit to bits with a crow bar causing thousands of pounds worth of damage and ending a holiday.
