We are going to Romania / Bulgaria in spring 2012 and want to take our bicycles on the back of the panel van. Do those of you who have first hand knowledge consider them to be safe from the naughty people? They will be locked on the the van body with "Silver Secure" locks and cables.

When you say locked to the van body do you mean the actual body or just to the aluminium bike rack?

We've just spent a month in Romania / Bulgaria and we didn't have any issues at all.

I've heard of peoples bikes being taken from the back of vans from most countries in Europe, some friends of ours even lost theirs in Norway. In that respect I would lock them up well regardless of what country you are in and consider a decent cover which any thief would have to set about removing before they could even assess if the bikes were worthy enough to nick. You can also get little rape alarm style locks which might be an idea if you intend to wild camp and are heavy sleepers.

Make sure the rack itself cannot be removed with bikes attached which would render any lock pointless.

P.S. - I replied to your PM, did you get it?

It's not dependent on the country !!

There are naughty people(as you put it) all over, my suggestion is "would you lock them if you were in the UK"

If the answer is "Yes", then lock them when your abroad.

If the answer is "No",then still lock them, as you don't want your holiday spoiled.

If you have space, and don't already do so, think of storing front wheels inside MH - extra deterrent?

I have just spent the last six months working on and off in Vidin in Bulgaria. Found the Bulgarians fantastic people.
Security is an issue in every Country.

Don't be misled into a false sense of security with "silver secure" or gold for that matter. These locks are fairly regularly tested by the cycling press, and none of them perform that well. In fact, the standard tests don't employ methods typically used by bike thieves. So, whatever method you use, make sure you only ever leave your bikes in a well frequented place, where potential thieves are more likely to be disturbed.
