Having recently dumped Windows and purchased a new iMac 21" pc i am slowing getting use to the different o/s and learning more each day.
One thing is confusing me and that is security for the mac, on windows I used AVG (paid a/c) and was happy for many years with it, I hate Norton with a vengeance .
Now I have been told that mac does not require security but that it also stores passwords/login info ect. So where are these kept and are they secure?
If it does require security which would you mac expert users install.
Hi
Congratulations on your purchase. You will soon appreciate the tremendous differences between Mac and Windows.
You don't need the anti virus security, but you could have a look at Ipassword from the app store for your personal security.
Kind regards
Alshymer
Hi there Bob - good decision. You do not need a security suite for the Mac, however, I do have one installed, not to protect the Mac, but in case I might forward any message with a malicious payload to a business client Windows user, which, I think, is a pretty unlikely situation. It does find viruses occasionally so if you want something, I suggest a free programme called ClamXav. Having said that, I quite often think about uninstalling it because it's not really necessary. All the family have Macs and I'm the only one with an antivirus app.
Regarding security, the Mac stores your passwords etc. in an application called "Keychain". Other applications then refer to this to get a password when required. If you want to see the stored passwords in Keychain, it will ask you for the Mac's login password first. To see how security is managed, look at Keychain>Preferences.
If you want to improve browser security for passwords, download and install "Rapport" from Trusteer. This is used and recommended by many of the banks, but it can also be used to protect sensitive information on other websites too.
Thanks guys, it goes to show there is no such thing as a stupid question, the reason is I had Rapport on my windows o/s but thought it wouldn't work on Mac (shows my studipty ) but it is downloaded now and I feel much happier.
I've been a Mac user for ... about 5 years? First with a white iBook (still works) and then a MacBook unibody (Annie uses this now and loves it) and I now have a MacBook Pro.
I've never used any antivirus program on any of them. I believe you can get Sophos for Mac (we used to use it in schools), but I personally wouldn't bother.
One reason I got myself a Macbook Pro two years ago is so I don't have to worry about security. The Windows desktop I had previously was covered by the security provided by John's employers, along with his laptop. When John retired four years ago (and treated himself to a Macbook Pro) I was left wondering what on earth I had to do to update anti-virus stuff on my computer, because, to be honest, I never understood it and was wary of searching for security on the internet.
It didn't take long for John, and my son (a long term Mac fan) to persuade me to join them in Appleland. Having already got myself an ipod and iphone the conversion wasn't difficult.
