I'm looking for some advice on the likely problem with my oldish Sony Vaio desktop PC. After being away for about 3 weeks, the computer (which was working fine when I left) would not boot up. All that happened was the fans would run at full tilt, but nothing on the screen. After messing about I managed to get it to boot up by removing one of the RAM memory modules - thinking this might be the problem I bought and fitted a new module - same result. I have since tried several RAM configurations, and the machine will only start up with the original 512mb RAM module installed.
Appreciate it if anyone can shed any light on the possible problem, I've run recovery discs so assume this must be some form of hardware issue.

All advice gratefully received!!

Thanks
John

Maybe faulty power unit (PSU).. Try resetting BiOS by shorting pins near BIOS camera type battery on mainboard. See manual.

Take out/ take off/unplug/remove everything you can except that which is necessary to boot up PC.

Sounds like you might have a bit of muck in the memory socket.

If it were me I'd remove all memory and cards inside the PC. Then gently vacuum with the brush adaptor. Then use a new 1" soft paintbrush and give everything a gentle brush. Vacuum again.

On the bits you've removed, wipe the metal contacts with either clean white paper (like photocopy paper) or an ink-rubber. Just gentle, don't go mad.

Plug everything back in making sure it's well seated.

Include the power supply in your cleaning. Be very careful of any fan blades, these will be brittle on an old machine.

Then fire it up again and see how it goes.

Tip - keep the power cord plugged into the PC (with the wall socket turned off) while you remove and then add back the components and keep one hand (or rest your bare arm) on the case. This will keep you grounded (earthed) during the process. No always necessary but a good precaution (especially if you're wearing nylons Smile )

I had exactly the same thing happen on our return from four weeks "over the water", no post, nothing , reset the bios to default and up and running again. I haven't a clue what caused it to alter though.

Does it work with the new module in slot the original 512mb module was in?

And is the new module the same spec as the original?

Some machines can be picky with certain brands of RAM depending in chipsets/BIOS support.

I wouldn't vacuum a PC myself.

I did try a new module in the same slot as the original ram - no joy, same symptoms. Power light on fans run fast.
I also thought it might be crud in the memory slots so gave it a good blow out. Moved the original ram into the spare slot and it booted up fine so I've sort of ruled that out now.
I'll look into how to reset the bios as per your advice - I haven't a clue what it does or how to find it yet!!! All the boards are behind the screen on this PC so more awkward than a normal one (well I think so!!) - may have to take it to someone who knows what they're doing!!
Let you know how I get on.

If your Sony is pre-2006 it might be worth googling the problem using the model number as Sony did (if I recall correctly) have some memory socket issues with a few models - your last post reminded me.

Lights and fans running full mean the computer is not getting as far as the bios (which controls that stuff). Probably failing at the POST (self test).

In any event, if you are managing to boot up with just one memory stick I would be inclined to start backing up everything you might need - just in case you have to transfer to a new PC.

I've used this site to look at Sony problems, some good advice to be found (lots of not so good too) http://esupport.sony.com/ but it might give you a point in the right direction.

Good luck

PS - as mentioned before, make sure the new RAM is exactly to specification. Older computers can become more sensitive.

Hi and thanks to all. I tried everything mentioned to no avail so resorted to taking to some "experts". All they managed to do was find a single 1GB ram module that would work. Still goes black if another module is added to the second slot, hence I draw the conclusion that it is past it's sell by date. It runs as a spare to the Mac so don't plan on any more investment Sad
Thanks again for your help.
