I've been searching Google for the latest info on the DVLA position on change of vehicle type, but not found anything.
Does anyone know if they've actually made their tiny minds up yet.
I ask as I rang MHF insurance this AM, to see if they would transfer the Coach-built MH insurance to a self build after we sell the MH, yes was the answer but we only had 90 days to do the self build then the policy would be cancelled (at least that's how I understood it) they would need to see pics of inside and out of the conversion, fair enough, also certificates for the gas/Electrical work too, also fair enough, but it would need to be on the V5 as a motor caravan, there in lies the problem.
The other problem is I don't think I could do the conversion finished in 90 days and get all the paperwork done, especially considering the approaching winter weather.
Thanks, but I already knew that much, I need to know what the current thinking is.
DVLA is rubbish at telling us which hoops they require us to jump through, it seems to be based around what a passer-by might think a vehicle is, so a converted ambulance might still appear to be an ambulance, even though it complies with all the the DVLA requirements, worse scenario, is I spend a small fortune doing it all right, and it gets classed as a van with windows, and that will just not do.
I need to hear from those who have just gone through it and have personal experiences to guide myself and others, so we get the change of type right first time.
Hi kev just had my v 5 back from dvla changed class to motor caravan had to prove what i have done by photo's all paper work from the firm that fitted the gas and lecy thay wanted to see what i have done//windows//pop top//rock n roll bed// sink// cooker//fridge. only prob we had thay said it dident look like a campa from outside ??????? phoned them up again and told them to look at the photos 1 week latter v 5 with motor caravan on it

I completed the conversion of a new VW T5 purchased and registered as a 'Window Van' into a Motor Caravan in June.
The conversion included the fitting of a high roof so external view was considerably altered, interior is more or less industry standard with kitchen units down the right side and Reimo Variotech seat/bed fitted.
My application to the DVLA was submitted with photos and a weight certificate from a local weighbridge. It was returned with body type changed to Motor Caravan without any further correspondence. That was June 2011.
Does anyone else have recent personal experience of this
I don't, but several members of the SBMCC are now having their conversions registered as 'Motor Caravan' : even those that were previously given a 'Van With Windows' designation but have now re-submitted their applications. It seems that the DVLA has changed it's mind.
Hopefully it'll all settle down now and those who are just chucking a sleeping bag, a camping cooker, and a porta potty, then trying to get the type changed will be weeded out.
